What constitutes an instrument?

I mentioned to a self-proclaimed band geek that I was learning to play the guitar, and then she tells me that she can play a real instrument. Yeah, I think you know where this is going.

Where does she get off telling me that a guitar is not a "real" instrument because she claimed to have learned how to play it in a week, and therefore it isn't a "real" instrument because it "requires little skill" to play? And she mentions to me that she knows how to play five different instruments as if that validated her claim somehow. Yeah, I'd like to see her tell this to Yngwie and Satch and see how that goes.

By her logic, a piano isn't a real instrument because it's just a bunch of damn black and white keys. I'd like to see you bend, palm-mute, and slide piano strings!

Are all music students this pretentious and stuck-up? I hope they all look forward to playing in their stuffy symphonies and orchestras in half-empty concert halls with poor ticket sales that can't recoup their expenses.
