Getting Into Anime / Manga...

Anyone got any advice on some anime to watch / manga to read? I've watched and read bits and pieces, but not really got into the media. Just interested in broadening my horizons a bit.

In terms of preferences:- Loved:- Elfen Lied for obvious reasons, Princess Mononoke, Death Note. Hated:- Naruto since it just seemed childish and vapid, similar with Bleach. Preferences:- Thoughtful, funny or just cool-ish.

Please help me, TV Tropes, you're my only hope!
