Ninja Gaiden General thread.

Raiden was...OK in 2 (pretty much all the hate was that he wasn’t Snake, and his girlfriend) but Revengence Raiden is amazing.

I don't like technology reliant ryu really. Really Ninja Gaiden is best when fighting fiends and other ninja, not when it's overly technology focused.

Like honestly i never liked the idea of ryu struggling to take down a tank especially since in NG tanks were a miniboss as opposed to an actual one. And the helicopter was only a challenge because it wouldn't come close enough to hit with the sword lol.

NG 3 made ryu look weaker than he should've which is another mark against that game.

NG 3 sort of seemed to be deconstructing Ryu in some way with the "Grip of Murder" and having more science based enemies as threats.

The tank thing could looked at as what happened in Greg Weissman's Gargoyles; Technology is catching with magic.

Ng 3 was pretentious hogwash and hayashi trying to wank ryu into his own crappy "cinematic" nonsense.

I give him credit in handling the women but he's not the best when it comes to doing ryu. Hayabusa took down the fiend equivalent of satan, why is he having so much trouble with a freakin robot? It's DUMB.

Next Ninja Gaiden I want Hayate to be playable. That would complete the ninja gang.

How powerful is the fiend equivalent of Satan supposed to be? Ryu isn't exactly a planet buster.

Ryu is simply as powerful as the plot demands. Not that any of the NG games have any real plot.

I just want something that's like Ninja Gaiden Black again.

The original NES games did. That was the entire point.

I wonder if they would remake the originals now, or if those setups would even hold up.

So any possibility on Irene/Sonia becoming playable?

You know, I just gotta say one thing. Harkening back to Gaijin Goomba's video about video game ninjas... I know Ryu doesn't follow the realistic ninja style of stealth, but I always thought that in Ryu's case... did you really think that ninja stealth would work when your opponents are fiends and demons from Hell? I mean, sure, ninjas are supposed to be info-gatherers, but when you are facing fiendish demons, info-gathering takes second place after ass-kicking.

That's just my two cents though.

In Nioh, Hanzo mentions that the Hayabusa clan is wayyy different from what he does, largely because of its role in killing demons. So there's merit to the idea.

That's kind of where the creators screwed up though. I mean, no one made them make a ninja video game where you fight demons instead of commit assassinations or gather info.

Well it's not like Ninja Gaiden was the first ninja game ever. And I think in those days, they prioritized Rule of Cool first before authenticity.

Though honestly, I think if Ryu would give it a shot on ninja espionage thing, he might be surprisingly good at it. I mean, yeah, people are too occupied with how they think the Hayabusa clan might be too into demon slaying that they forgot ninja stealth, only for him to show that NOPE, the Hayabusa ninja did NOT forget the stealth. So they were hiding their stealth skills with demon slaying feats.

It's just that they never got offers for stealth and espionage, they just get demon-slaying offers.

Like, in comparison to Ryu she's Unskilled, but Strong but overall she has a decent grasp of combat techniques.

Also here's hoping for NGIV someday soon because if Dead Or Alive can get an announcement out of nowhere so can Ninja Gaiden. Might have to wait for after Ni-Oh 2 though.

Assuming we get a new game, what should it be about? And who should be playable?

So what would you guys like to see in a new game?

Well it would be nice if the original trilogy re-made or something along those lines. I guess I would like to Ryu finally tie the knot with Irene & see what their lives are like after the original trilogy but it's not like I ever manage to beaten a Ninja Gaiden game.

Ninja Gaiden IV, assuming they make it, has the potential to be something special for sure.

Ninja Gaiden II Sigma is, I think, the best one out there right now. It took the liquid-perfect combat of II and balanced the difficulty curve into something manageable for a larger number of players. It's a perfect example of what that team can do when it's on the right track.

The trouble with Ninja Gaiden III is they went off that track. They put more emphasis on narrative (Which is really easy to do with a series like this.) which is great! The problem is they let that drag down the gameplay. They took away dismemberment because it made the enemies feel more like ragdolls than people and they wanted you to feel the killing more. They succeeded in this! When I was cutting down those terrorists they definitely had a sense of (literal) weight to them. But this was at the cost of making the core hack and slash experience less fun. No dismemberment, no alternate weapons, less magic...

All of this was rectified with Razor's Edge but the damage was done.

So. Don't touch the gameplay. Give us what we got from II Sigma and Razor's Edge. But try again with that "Actually has a plot." thing. III wasn't any more engaging than II, but the thing is III actually tried so that's just embarrassing. III had a lot that it seemed to want to say but never actually said anything worthwhile. For IV, just give us a Action Movie plot. A few memorable characters, a few cool setpieces, a betrayal that hopefully won't get telegraphed by the trailers a year before release... Try harder than I & II but don't expect the game to be the next Metal Gear Solid. And don't try any Gameplay and Story Integration unless you really know what you're doing this time.

Oh and I want like twenty new types of fiends to fight. With all the old ones too. Freakin' love hacking up demons.

• New types of enemies. Maybe instead of fiends we can have Youkai like Kitsune, Tengu and Nekotama.

• Rachel, Ayane and Momiji as playable characters.

• Kasumi and Hayate could be playable as either unlockable or DLC.

• Rachel's gameplay I think could use some refinement. In place of the hammer and gun, I'd use give her an axe, whip and sword. She'd be faster than her previous incarnations but not as fast as the ninjas and with a Pankration influenced fighting style. More spells that play up the rose and snake themes would be nice to and maybe integrate her moves from DOA 5 Ultimate. Her close range abilities would in theory be the most powerful of the cast.

• Momiji is the Glass Cannon and is better at long range combat. In team battles she'd handle crowd control well. More flame based attacks.

• Ayane is the jack of all stats.

• Kasumi is the lightning bruiser hitting hard and fast but not as versatile.

• Hayate uses a stance system of two styles: Mugen Tenshin and Karate. Mugen Tenshin focuses on sword skills, teleports and ninpo wind skills. Karate is a bit closer to beat em up.

• Tag team combos between characters like DOA would be nice. I.E Rachel and Momiji have a move in which Rachel ensnares opponents in her vines which Momiji uses as a media for flames.

Have a descendant of William adams from Nioh be a secret boss. William does fight Ryu's ancestor, so....

Anyone got any ideas for who the villains should be? I think NG could do with a memorable one this time.

That is actually an excellent idea. They absolutely should do that. Of course William Adams was a real person, wonder if his genealogy was traced any.

Regent of the Mask was definitely memorable. His antics are the best story bits of that game.

Well I guess it is hard to forget him. Still though any ideas for the villain of a new game? Maybe Yaiba?

Let's pretend Yaiba never happened.

I love the william adams descendant idea so much. It's brilliant.

We've fought tengu before, but considering their connection with ninja it'd be neat if they got a bigger role.
