Cyberdisks can phase through walls and shoot you to pieces at the same turn.
The Second Wave option Itchy Trigger Tentacles will have aliens shoot you on sight, but it is pnly in Enemy Within and you have to clear Classic Mode to unlock it.
That explains why the aliens can easily overwhelm you on Easy.

Where there's life, there's hope.then how do I prevent that? No matter where I go on the map it's wrong
If you clump your soldiers together and concentrate fire, you can overwhelm an alien pod. After you're done killing that pod, set out to look for another pod, and so one.
Where there's life, there's hope.Speaking of, I've finished the game on Classic!
There are 3 times where the game got hard. 1st is when I still had basic weapons against Thin Men. 2nd is Base Defense. 3rd is where I first encountered the Sectopod. The rest of the game is a cakewalk. I even beat Site Recon with ballistic weapons.
Where there's life, there's hope.Twentington: Choose one random direction and send the entire squad in that relative direction. Fights should be 4 on 2s at this point, so if nothing else, you can win be sheer statistics if things go south.
Grats!
It's worth noting that if you camp the Command Center's high ground during the Base Defense, the enemies are at a severe disadvantage and will happily wander in 1-2 at a time to die to concentrated fire.

FE: New Mystery Fresh Cart Lunatic 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiOkay, I stumbled into escorting the girl back to safety. Now it wants me to put a satellite somewhere.
And now I stumbled through that UFO mission with no damage somehow. I'm back at the base, but it's given me no direction.
That's because it is giving you freedom.

Where there's life, there's hope.So now what?
Do whatever you want, research whatever catches your fancy.
Tip: Build satellite uplinks, workshops, and power generators in blocks of 2x2.
If all of the countries in a continents are covered by satellites, the aliens won't abduct citizens over there, lessening Sadistic Choice.

Where there's life, there's hope.Uh?
And I would know that how?
Have you received your first Council Report? Like did they give you a letter grade for your performance or something?
Where there's life, there's hope.I dunno?
Which means you haven't gotten over the first month yet, which means tutorial is still on. Press Y to access mission control and press A.
Where there's life, there's hope. And what will that do?
Speed up the ingame clock so you can reach events more quickly.
Where there's life, there's hope.So what should I do at the base?
Nothing yet. Not until you get your first paycheck.
Customize your goons, maybe?

Where there's life, there's hope.Paycheck?
After each month the Council of Nation will give you money depending on how many countries with satellite on and how many countries left the Council.
Where there's life, there's hope.Eh, you'll get it eventually.
Where there's life, there's hope.So far I haven't.
I successfully navigated the UFO crash site, somehow. I'm back at the base.
WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO NOW?!?!
Usually the latter because I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHERE TO GO.
