kosher non-Jewish food

Hasn't coke been kosher for a while? Not that it's specifically mentioned.

I'm glad to hear oreos are permissible, though.

But Coke isn't Kosher for Passover.

... I can't help but read that brand name as "Manly Sweets."

I got a little confused reading through the article, though. Are their new mainstream-marketed brands still kosher?

Coke in the U.S. has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it, Corn, being considered a grain, makes it not Kosher for passover. I actually see Coke that is Kosher for Passover. I am pretty sure it is made with sugar instead of HFCS.

There are a lot of foods that are kosher, they just have such unobtrusive labeling. You need to know where to look.

Corn is a grain and American Coca Cola is made with high-fructose corn syrup. They make kosher-for-Passover Coca Cola during Passover, and it's always really expensive and sells out really fast because there are a lot of non-Jews buying it. There's also Mexican Coca Cola that I see in some stores, which also has cane sugar instead of HFCS, but for some reason that's not flying off the shelves...

I think it's because the ones that they put out for Passover are actually branded "kosher", and the one's made in Mexico aren't.

I know a lot of people that didn't know that kosher was a Jewish thing, and just equated it with "healthy" or "safe".

Well, it kinda makes sense if you think about it. There aren't really a whole lot of Jewish evangelists, it's not widely talked about in the media, and "kosher" or "kosh" is often used as slang for "good".

For example: "Yeah, it's totally kosh if you bring chili to game night dude."

I've never heard it used that way before. The most I've heard it used as slang is that it's "proper" or "appropriate."

Good, proper, appropriate, okay, acceptable, etc. Depends on context I guess.

Yes, Giraffe is technically Kosher, but I've heard that 1: its illegal to kill them, as they are endangered, and 2: It would be quite hard to make a proper "schita" (slaughter). You would have to cut in just the right place so as to cause the least amount of pain possible, and as the Giraffe's neck is so long, it would be hard to find the proper place.

Edit: dammit, I know we have that trope. Anyway, kosher is indeed used as a synonym for "acceptable" in my experience.

Yeah, even here. I think kosher is more widely known than halal, in any case.
