@USAF "All you have is proximity, which is meaningless" And what exactly do you have? The oil isn't UNDER the islands, it's NEAR them, just like it's NEAR Argentina.

And does it occur to you that Kirtchner wasn't leader in 95?

Edit:@Erock It would be fitting if he did, given he's a giant motherfucker who likes to screw people over for no good reason. Seriously though, I don't think Canada's contribution will tip the scales in a massive way.

That said, I do believe the UK would win a war on it's own, so it's irrelevant.

The U.K. would kick Argentina's sorry ass again, easily. And if they couldn't, they'd call up NATO and Argentina would be ROYALLY fucked.

I'm baaaaaaack

Argentina wants the Falklands back.

Spain wants Gibraltar back.

Ireland wants Northern Ireland back.

Everybody wants a piece of the Brits. I bet there's more too.

@Joesolo NATO doesn't mean much these days.

@Bat

1 Not by much

2 According to USAF, proximity is meaningless, only centuries old land claims are important

3 If the Falklands were independent, that would be relevant, but the chief actor, the one who will benefit here is the UK government, so it's not just a question of Falklands vs Argentina, it's a question of Argentina vs the UK

I don't see the point in attempting to reason with them.

Say Canada and the ANZAC countries back Britain (as I hope they would). What does that give Britain? I know Canada's navy is actually kind of kick-ass, but I don't know much about the ANZAC military forces (other than that you do not fuck with the Australian SAS).

Jeez, this thread exploded....

Here's a question: Are the Argentinians actually threatening military force again?

According to the Wikipedia article the Argentinian Government has pledged to seek "peaceful solutions," or whatever.

But with the shit going on in Europe I bet they think they can get away with what they wouldn't be able to otherwise.

[up][up]

To my knowledge, not yet, and they probably won't, the possibility of loss is to great, for not enough gain.

@Shinra No, I believe they ruled out military action. They're trying to diplomatically pressure the UK.

I think the Falklands has a better possibility of gaining independence than they do the Brits giving it up to Argentina...

That said, Brazil putting the pressure on will have to be taken seriously (BTW, they have designs on French Guiana? Any sources to that, I find that interesting...)

@Shinra No, I was just guessing. It'd make sense if they did. At least to me.

The one thing I know about Argentinian military forces is that they're expanding their navy.

Whereas the Royal Navy has almost ceased to be an effective fighting force. (Seriously they have so few ships it almost can't be considered a navy.)

Royal Navy including Auxiliary: 98 ships

Argetine Navy: 42 ships

Don't the South American fleets buy most of their equipment secondhand?

Though ultimately this doesn't prove anything as it matters more what ships they have, I still think that this just about made my day. [lol]

[up][up][up] I doubt that the Royal navy plus friends would send every available ship down there ASAP.

What's the quality of both ?

@Shinra Not all the time. They're building it themselves.

@USAF: Hell our Navy is almost as big as Argentina at 33 ships.

The beautiful thing about all this is that the combination of British and Canadian forces would probably be sufficient to pwn Argentina, but if push came to shove and the US Government wasn't being idiotic, a single US Navy carrier battle group could blow everything Argentina has out of the water by itself.

I think they're not pursuing a military solution not because they like peace, but because they know that they'd probably lose.

That's the intelligent thing to do about it, yep. Seriously, how is that even relevant?

Other users have already covered the points I'd like to make.
