I think "the first cover" is probably best. As a general rule, I've always thought works pages are not the place for clever or fancy image selection. I almost always favor the the original one-sheet poster for a movie, first edition dust jacket for literature, promo cast picture for a TV series, etc.
A comic strip doesn't usually have such obvious choices, but I think that first cover fits well.
Jet-a-Reeno!I feel like that scene does show an important aspect of it.
...that being said, The Essential does have a very nice image...
I have a message from another time...Personally I like the one with Hobbes tackling him, but the first cover seems more appropriate.

What is this "sleep" you speak of?Calvin Riding his wagon into a lake works.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.It is a bad caption, not a bad picture.
But at the same time, lazing around is one of the last things Calvin is associated with doing. The wagon rides and Hobbes's pouncing him when he comes home are far more iconic.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.Cover of the first book is better.
I like the current image, just not as much.
Infinite Tree: an experimental storyFirst cover > tackled by Hobbes > transmogrifier
Just some more options from their sunday color ROFL◊, pounce◊, 10th Anniversary◊
There's also an entire section of C&H Wallpapers here [1]
You are displaying abnormally high compulsions to over-analyze works of fiction and media. Diagnosis: TV Tropes Addiction. There's a lot of good stuff there. But I think the wagon and umbrella pic still does the best job of capturing the feel of the comic.
Belief or disbelief rests with you.Yeah, the wagon one that was the cover of the first book would do nicely.

Stop, Crowner Time!
Blank crowner's hooked, no time to fill it right now.
I agree with the "bad caption" sentiment.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyI axed the caption; the cover does illustrate a good chunk of what the comic is actually like, so the captions was just wrong.
Reaction Image RepositoryI still like the first cover more, seems more indicative to me.
Support Gravitaz on Kickstarter!Yeah, the one in Mattonymy's post with the wagon and umbrella is pretty good.
Reaction Image RepositoryThis one's pretty definitive. The new pic's up and tagged; caption as needed. Locking up.
Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
The picture on Calvin and Hobbes has a caption that says that the picture in question does not reflect how they are in the comics. So why not replace it with a picture that does show that?
If we want to stick to one of the book covers, then this cover◊ or this one◊ or even the first cover◊ gives a much better reflection of what the comics are like.
