What would you define it as?

Medicaid is socialist. You know, in the broad, general meaning of "mainstream leftist" that is not contrary to market economy at all...

Socialism really should not primarily mean East Bloc socialism...

Octo Democracy is a tool. You can use it to create a self destructive crap like Italy. Or you can use it to create genuine progress and wellbeing for your country. But it guarantees neither.

Edit: But you are right about no one being better than you. Hierarchy for hierarchies sake is a lie.

But that is the natural consequence. If there's no democracy, then that means there's one guy, or a bunch of people, who think they can decide better than me. Who deny me rights to participate in those decisions. Who hence for all practical concerns do consider themselves my betters.

Democracy is hence more than a tool. It is the only legitimate form of government, entirely and end in itself.

Also, lol @ naming Italy as a negative example. In Europe, yes, but on the world scene, compared to a majority of states, Italy is a shining example on what to do right.

Check out the bottom-most quote - if this is typical of the CCP then China will have a bit more than just a hangover...

@Tomu,

They're mixed-market and vaguely similar to a welfare state, albeit one funded by crony capitalism...

That's why it's abhorrent to call it socialism ;P

It's like they WANT to empower the crazy "all things socialist are EEVIL and doomed to FAILURE" guys on our side of the pond.

@ sssfx

But why would it be typical of CCP? The article itself says the guy is being canned for his crazy attitude.

[up] He's being canned because he makes the situation worse - not because of the meaning of his words.

When dealing with culturally-Chinese people, that's an important distinction.

What? I'm not sure what that means. Could you explain that in more detail?

[up] Hypothetical situation time!

There is a Group A ruling over Country B. There is a Person C who works for Group A. Everyone in Group A says to each other, in private, "People who wear round glasses are stupid." Then Person C steps out and says the exact same thing: "People who wear round glasses are stupid." This causes everyone who wears round glasses to shout slogans such as, "We must take up arms and shoot Group A for what they have said!"

Group A will then "silence" Person C for doing something that has harmed Group A, even though everyone in the group privately believes that people who wear round glasses are stupid.

This is the essence of any sufficiently-large, sufficiently-long-lived, and/or sufficiently-powerful organization's policy of public discipline of its higher-ups. In China this syndrome gets worse because of their 5,000-year-history of practicing this art.

Another summation of China's epic hangover. What's most interesting about this one is that it lasted a few hours on the People's Daily, when the expectation is that it ordinarily wouldn't be put up at all.

Do you think the PRC has a censorship department, or is it just the top officials who handle it?

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

They have a censorship department which is normally populated by moral guardian types. There's only a few key things political they disallow because it's unmanageable otherwise (whereas moral guardians get a lot of public support).

Full political censorship is really hard these days with the zillions of Chinese bloggers, alternative news sources, SAR places like Hong Kong and Macao, the trivially broken "Great Firewall" and so on. Basically, they only come after you if you say something like "I want to overthrow China" and you're important enough to give a crap.

blogger has been intimidated / arrested and Great Firewall only broken if you buy high speed private net or skillful enough to hide your IP. China political censorship never means to be "full". China censorship goal is to make difficult for ordinary net users. those who are not net-savvy or rich will find news about unrest on Tibet never appear during their browsing.

Wow, region-baiting, race-baiting, divisive comments, explosion over something relatively minor....this makes me feel better about the samples of people we're seeing from the Republican primaries!wink

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.
