The dying part seems pretty accurate, yeah.
...though, the parts in quotes confuse me. Who's saying that? Is it the singer, or is the singer quoting the boyfriend? Because if it's the former I can agree with your interpretation, but if there is anything that can suggest the latter, I'd say that she is trying to fulfil something that he once said; she's locking herself in the birdcage because he once said that if he could, he would lock her in the cage so that she would always stay next to him.
