Every time I hear about this game, regardless of title, my mind always calls it "Obsidian Needs Money Badly".

[up]Considering all the crap they've gone through financially over the last year, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

Well, glad to hear some more news about the game, even if it's only a title revealed.

Not everyone (and by that i mean no one) can consistently break budget on doing it for the art and still make a living. At least they're doing a project that's funny.

I hear the title and I can think of it The Order Of The Stick.

Yeah, it would be an epic year for RPGS, except for that apocalypse thing.

And knowing Obsidian, they'll put all their heart and soul on this project. Fallout New Vegas, if you may remember, was much more than Fallout 3-2

If you wanna PM me, send it to my mrsunshinesprinkles account; this one is blorked.

@Nettacki Oh I agree. I hope they make a crap load of money. Then they can make Alpha Protocol 2 or something.

They're likely to be working on a kickstarter once Chris Avellone finishes working on Wasteland 2 so that's where the real shit will go down, an Obsidian game with no publisher intervention whatsoever.

In the meantime I'm sure South Park will be hilarious and the combat will be fun but I think I might wait until it's a bit a cheaper and save my money for the Kickstarter...it's not like Obsidian gets a cut of the sales anyway.

Keep in mind, that Obsidian would get very little resources and wouldn't be making a game on the scale of Alpha Protocol, much less the massive backing of Fallout New Vegas if they went the Kickstarter route.

I think some people get the wrong idea of what kind of games come out of Kickstarter, even by well-known developers.

I...I'm not sure what to think about this...it almost seems like a waste for Obsidian to make something like this. But knowing them, they'll make this work...somehow.

based on an employee count of around ~135, I estimate that it takes about 750k (estimating a lowball average salary since they're starving, but glassdoor tells me they might have the standard California software company salaries) to keep Obsidian's doors open per month. Given also that it takes about 3 years for an Obsidian game to come out, I think relying on a kickstarter would be entirely too starry eyed.

It'd probably be a Planescape Tormentesque game but with actually good combat (and probably turn based judging by the massive demand on CA's blog post). Given the serious lack of isometric turn based crpgs I'd be all for it. Plus a return to the Torment style would be awesome.

I think their CEO said it was 1 mill.

It'd probably be a small team of about 15 people while they still maintain other AA level projects and pitches. That's probably another reason why they're taking so long. They want to maintain being a midsized developer making comparatively larger scale products as opposed to going full on independent like inXile.

Double posting:

Delayed to early 2013

Delays are always a good thing seeing as most of their games are rushed like hell. FNV could have had a lot more content and possibly a playable epilogue if they had the delay South Park is getting.

But how will be play it when humanity is a collective smudge on the road of eternity?

Apocalypse doesn't care about schedule. Except, you know, it's own. Always fuckin' delays grumble grumble. Guess they care about getting it right too.

Just watched it, and it looks amazing. I am so, so psyched for this. Was the trailer the only thing shown? Because others are talking like there was more shown by Trey and Matt.

[down] Yeah, the trailer definitely had gameplay in it. Nice new avie by the way.

[up][up]Yes there was:

This is Matt and Trey's announcement at E3 where they basically take the piss out of Microsoft's stuff and just generally goof around.

This is Matt and Trey's interview with Gametrailers where they continue to goof around and mention occasionally how the game works. For the most part it's nothing new, the player is a custom character who will join the gang and part of the story involves fitting in and getting along with the companions, likely with a companion reputation meter.

[up]Yeah, that's true. There is some gameplay there, though not very much. Again it says mostly what we already know, paper mario style turn based combat. I think the moving around the city will be generally side scrolling though I'm not sure if the camera will be as close to the characters as the show is or something more like The World Ends with you style map roaming where there's a distant and slightly angled approach though not exactly isometric.

Jeez I need to pay more attention to trailers...or maybe watch them more than once. One of those.

I guess that answers it as a side scroller for the overworld stuff.

Also, poor Butters appearing on the front cover. His parents are going to give him a lot of shit for that.
