From here:

Remember Atlas Shrugged, the blink-and-you-miss-it adaptation of Ayn Rand’s unwieldy novel of ultimate evil? The film has hit DVD (which means you can attempt to watch it in your own home, where you have easy access to booze and razors), but the producers are recalling the remaining copies on store shelves (probably all of them) because of an error on the packaging.

The error is in this sentence. See if you can figure out what it is:

“AYN RAND’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice comes to life…”

I understand the desire to maintain control over the message you sell, but am I the only one thinking this is a bit much?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

What, fixing an error that resulted in Covers Always Lie is a bad thing? tongue

Seriously, cover designers don't have to know the contents of the work within the cover, so it's not unthinkable that they could get something wrong.

The side effect, invariably, will be to make the copies with the "error" very very valuable at some point down the line.

I wonder what Rand would think of that...

@Totemic Hero: Don't think so. I think they'll still be unpopular.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

It has nothing to do with popularity of the movie. Recalls due to errors (of any sort, from printing mishaps to weird stuff like this) almost always make any remaining examples a collectible, and there's always a market for such things.

If by "self" they mean "every unlucky person under your foot who isn't you", then that's perfectly accurate.

To follow up, yes I realize why noise is being made about the error, but it strikes me as a bit petty to be doing so purely because of the story's politics, particularly when it's quite possibly just a simple error by someone who's not heard of AS before and not some political statement by the cover designer.

Because the entire movie was funded by arch-libertarians who wanted to cater specifically to a hardcore objectivist audience.

It was an absolute critical flop and I havent heard yet of anyone who doesnt drink the Rand Koolaid who didnt think it was an awful attempt at bringing a book to life.

I’m not sure anyone thought it was a political statement. It’s just almost impossible to read “Ayn Rand” and “self-sacrifice” in the same sentence without bursting into hysterical fits of laughter.

I'm sure it was an honest mistake made by someone who never read/watched it or understood it. Self-sacrifice is a fairly common and generic thing to say about a work, since lots of stories tend to be about self-sacrifice in some form. Even if it is a shot in the dark, it's often one that hits.

It just happens to be a hilarious twist of fate that this time the "self-sacrifice" quip was used, it happened to be about a story that was about anything but,

I know enough about Ayn Rand to understand what happened here but for some reason the whole thing still reads like an Onion article to me.

On the plus side, this means that the movie as a whole is losing even more money than it already was.

[up] Yeah, it is a problem.

This is a story about how exploiting people less fortunate than you is okay, because you are making a profit!

Unless you are one of the people being exploited. Then it's wrong.

I dont see how Self-Sacrifice could be ideologically damning.

I mean... I go back to my favourite Objectivist Andrew Ryan:

"And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well". Isnt that the Ryand ideology???

Why not?

After all Atlas shrugged is just some pulp fiction.

But then again that quote is used alot by objectivist and actually comes from the bible minus the raputre part of course. Or maybe notidea
