Can anyone recommend an anime or manga that is similar to Puella Magi Madoka Magica? Something with shocking plot twists, brilliant action sequences, surreal animation like the animation in the witch barriers, a dark tone, and characters who resemble Homura in any way shape or form. Madoka is in my opionion one the best works of fiction of all time, so I would appreciate it if someone recommended something similar.

Many of the series' trademarks are due to mixing straight Magical Girl tropes with Gen Urobuchi's writing style and Shaft's animation, both of which are highly distinctive. You probably won't find anything from other writers or studios which has the same feel.

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion is sort of similar. Bakemonogatari is probably SHAFT's closest work

In the mean time, there's Oriko Magica, and there'll be a movie sequel eventually

That's a general recommendations thread. I get the feeling that leafeon wants something as close to PMMM as possible in multiple aspects and there's a ton of suggestions to sift through in that thread.

[up] Those are questions he can, and SHOULD, ask there.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.
