Lost: Granholm was a Canadian. She wasn't that great a governor. A good Attorney General, but lousy governor.

I think she was a US citizen, only that she was born in Canada.

Either way she was terrible as a governor.

I'm assuming she was a Democrat.

Correct, and the fact the economy crumbled while she just so happened to be governor, therefore, everyone shifted the blame on her party.

Snyder didn't even attend debates and he won by a landslide simply because he had an (R) next to his name.

Such things end up as a lesson to the electorate that "vote for the other guy, we need a change!" can be a really bad idea — the other guy can be even worse.

And that is why two party system is horrible.

But that's off-topic.

This loophole is enough to drive a bus through, but it does not make the law completely useless, because it still prevents non-verbal forms of bullying, such as mugging people for lunch money (that they shouldn't have to carry in cash, but that's another story).

The thing is that is not really the problem. Individual bullying like that is relatively easy to deal with. What is needed is aid in dealing with social bullying which is the much bigger problem.

This law only makes bullying on a social level worse for those living in Michigan - whomever enacted this probably WAS and STILL IS a bully anyway, so this doesn't surprise me at all. But it royally pisses me off and makes me wish somone would just rebel against this gov't already.

Well I'm personally more concerned that they think writing laws and handing punishments (ignoring the flaws in the law's wording) is going to work. We need to stop bullying, which means improving school culture and environment, not have police everywhere.

I'd imagine that assault and robbery were illegal to begin with.

Yes, this loophole does make the law completely useless. It's less of a loophole and more of a gaping shotgun wound at the heart of the very idea of anti-bullying. In fact, it makes bullying both worse and easier as now the bully's can claim legal protection of their actions.

The reason this stuff passes is that nobody is actually paying attention. The economy is so bad, that if it isn't connected to creating jobs, no one cares. They just made severe cuts to staff in the public schools, the Mayor of Detroit is saying we are going to get an emergency financial manager (himself, most likely) and there is this push to stop the state from building another bridge to Canada (which would compete with the privately owned one we have). Michigan is basically suffering from a severe case of attention deficit disorder right now.

[up]Job creation isn't everything if education, infastructure, and business aren't there for the sake of the people. I can see why Michigan is becoming Hell, USA, to you and me!

When the state's people start warring from all the BS, let me know. Because there are NO JOBS COMING there, unless it's slavery, as far as I'm concerned. Especailly if they continue electing nuts like these!

Actually, we have the second fastest growing economy in the nation, after North Dakota. We've been heavily investing in health and green tech sectors at least since Granholm's day. We still rank very high in unemployment, however, so the pain is still there, and still distracting people.

So, while it does cover somebody saying "you are going to burn in hell", it does not cover touching, harassing, or threatening a person. It also covers any religion or moral belief.

Again. What is the problem?

The problem is that you do not have to touch, harass, or threaten a person to hurt them emotionally, all you have to do is make civil, but hateful statements, or exclude the victim, or treat the victim condescendingly. Some of the most devastating kinds of bullying are like that.
