I'd really like an explanation on how a dog having cancer qualifies as 'Pet the Dog'.

For my mother, this movie qualifies as "Rule of Stanley Tucci". When we saw the trailer before Machine Gun Preacher, my mother told me that she had to see it once Tucci showed up.

The pet the dog moment has Sam Rogers (Kevin Spacey) petting his dying dog. In the last scene of the movie he buries it.
