IMO, the problem with the Final Fantasy franchise has less to do with western tastes, and more to do with internal problems at Square-Enix. Final Fantasy 13 wouldn't have gotten such mixed reviews if it didn't insist on such a bizarre idea as "no towns," western tastes or not.

( Granted, I suspect in part the internal dysfunctions as Square-Enix are caused by executives noting that western games actually sell these days, and viewing this as some inevitable affront to japanese dominance that must be solved. Nevermind that there is little relevant crossover between the Final Fantasy market and, say, Call of Duty. . . )

Gaming isn't just Mario and Pokemon though.

It also isn't just Zelda or Metroid or anything Nintendo, really.

Very true. However, Nintendo games (especially games in the main Nintendo Cash Cow series) are probably the best examples of japanese games nowadays that has good quality, gameplay, and enjoyability regardsless of who you are.

He's got a good point, although this debate has again sorta gone into the whole east/west divide that i'm getting incredibly worried about.

Anime HAS gotten too niche, with unnumerable series focusing on moeblobs and fighting harems. I shamelessly enjoy it but it's narrowing the mass appeal quite a lot. Less mass appeal means less money.

Honestly though, i have nothing against more games being made specifically to target me, seeing as i'm dead set in the core gamer market. My only worry is if these games don't make it over here. If things go on as they do, the west will be getting nothing but gritty military shooters and the east will be getting nothing but by-the-numbers teenagers saving the world JRPG stories for years to come. That would be a tragedy. Variety is the spice of life!

The best way to remedy all this? Just make them good. You'll notice games that sell well all around the globe have one thing in common: They're unambiguously of high quality. Make something thought-provoking enough with enough solid gameplay to back it up and people will buy it wherever they are, and wherever it came from.

You mean we must keep from making video games turn into endless fap and fetish material that appeals mainly to Hikikomori? I'm all for that!

Sorry... I'm a little bitter about what anime has turned into over the years. sad

I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting Agency

If that's the philosophy that made the Narutimate series so absurdly over-the-top, I'm all for that.

No regret shall pass over the threshold!
