Arnold laughed in disbelief.

"Oh come on, Zombie drills? You're kidding, right?"

She chuckled a little.

Dead serious. They have their own survival guide and combat protocols, the works. Might still have mine somewhere, come to think of it.

Sharon chewed on the pen for a bit, nibbling at at the flat end. Kinda makes me wonder if they knew this was coming, you mnow?

Arnold was still laughing as she elaborated.

"Now that would be an interesting read..."

He then leaned in closer to her.

"Umm... I know it's not really appropriate to ask, but... did you lose anyone, you know... important to you in all of this?"

She shook her head.

Earlier. I don't really want to talk about it. At least not right now.

Arnold took a short moment of silence.

"Oh... sorry, I didn't mean to bring it up..."

He then rested his hand upon Sharon's in a sign of comfort.

As Carlos traveled along the road, keeping a careful watch for zombies, he spotted some survivors gathered around an ambulance. He tried to slowly position himself to get a better view, hoping to gauge their intentions before approaching them, but he stepped on a fallen branch. The resulting crack made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end, and he was certain they would have heard it as well.

She sighed, withdrawing her hand to write.

It's fine.

The cold air stung her open cut. She wondered what was taking their new EMT friend so long. Well, she could disinfect the area around the wound herself, but until he got to work with the tweezers, there wasn't much to be done about the glass. Best to just try and pass the time, she figured.

Sharon stretched her left leg, pressing her toes against the roofs and soles of her thick rubber boots. She gave her calf a quick massage, grimacing with relief as she dug into some hard knots. Swapping out her left for her right, she folded this one over her left leg, stretching the leg and wiggling the toes. But this time, it wasn't her calf she massaged, oddly enough. It was the area just below the hip, right around where the leg connected to her pelvis.

After rubbing it for a few seconds, she scowled, and set the leg back down, glaring at it.

What calm had settled in for Seiko wasn't going to last very long. It was fine when the salaryman and the woman who didn't speak went into the ambulance. While the woman was armed she had put her gun away and seemed the least likely to be a problem. They might even have a common experience, being women having to survive in this hellish world that the zombie apocalypse had brought about. With everyone else talking Seiko focused her efforts on listening for the arrival of the zombie horde she feared deep down would come for their group. When she heard first a clatter from the store door, then the snapping of wood, she dropped any pretense of peacefulness.

Hoping the others would hear inspect the second sound Seiko moved for the door to the Walmart with her gun levelled at about chest height. If some zombie had come out of the store she was going to make sure it didn't have a chance to feast on anyone. She certainly found someone there all right, but it wasn't a zombie at all. Just another survivor, who'd tried to avoid their group or something. Keeping her shotgun at the ready she stepped towards him with a somewhat relieved expression.

Strangely she wasn't as confrontational this time, asking him simply, "Daijobu? You OK?"

Arnold continued to speak to Sharon as she massaged herself.

"You know, between you and me, I really don't trust a lot of those others that we're here with. So, if things do go to hell, I say me and you just split from them as soon as we can, right?"

If it comes to that. Only if. Oh, and we'll be taking him.

She nodded at Rick, unaware of the potentially vicious battle for custody he would soon find himself wrapped up in.

Really, I think the ones we have to worry about the most right now are those two bikers. I don't think I really have to say that they seem a dangerous sort.

A smirk crosses her face, and she wrote the next bit choking back a giggle. Also, your mail order bride over there's looking awfully twitchy. Might want to keep an eye on her.

She looked out the window, but Arnold's "mail order bride" was nowhere to be found. Squinting, she could make out the outlines of two people in the street...

I think she found another one.

Arnold looked over to Seiko and the other guy.

"Oh, that's great. Maybe she'll threaten to blow his head off as well, poor guy... and by the way, Mail Order Bride? Really, how pathetic do you think I am?"

Now that they didn't have any guns pointed at them, both bikers were much calmer. The keys Kurt had looted were from a Chevy Silverado, and there was one on the parking lot. He pushed the button, and the locks opened.

"Bingo!", he said. Both him and Scalps started loading their loot on the van: It was a whole lot of loot: High-end laptops, a whole lot of computer pieces and other electronics, canned food for a regiment, and lots upon lots of booze, ammo and medicine. They were well-stocked, and ready to go. Anyway, they still needed to recruit somebody: The two of them wouldn't be able to defend a compound on their own.

Ambulance was a bit disorganized. It took Rick about half a minute to find a spritzer half filled with distilled water, a pair of tweezers, disinfectant, and some fresh bandages, leaving the office worker to talk with the veteran. "Sorry 'bout that," Rick said as he returned. He took the woman's arm, spritzing water over the cut, washing away the dried blood. He inspected the cut quickly, swiftly.

"Seems like there's nothing in there," Rick commented, wiping the old cut with a disinfecting swab, then drying it with a gauze pad. "Shouldn't get infected." Which is good. It's not like I have an X-ray machine to check for deeper pieces.

Steven was just about to try to make his way through the store when he heard someone behind him. He turned to see a woman, but the only thing that mattered was the gun she had pointed at him. He gulped and rose his hands. She didn't look like she was going to shoot him, but he was also not the best at judging people and he knew that.

"I-I'm fine." Steven managed to stammer. He still had his handgun in the holster, and was afraid to even look at it. Zombies were one kind of problem, but this was a person with unpredictable interests and a gun at point blank range. If she decided he was gonna die, then he was dead. Best to just play nice as best he could. "I-I just came here looking for food. I heard the people here but I just wanted to stay out of the way."

His eyes went outside to the ambulance. That is where the voices must have been coming from. It was crazy that he hadn't noticed that. He would need to be more careful. "Are you with them?" He asked timidly.

When I thought that I fought this war alone, you were there by my side on the front line. And we fought to believe the impossible...

Our boys in uniform have a bit of a beef with anyone who holds a desk job, let's put it like that. She scrawled. Offering a thankful nod to Rick, she pressed on the bandage, smoothing out any pockets of air. As a last little assurance, she slapped it down and flexed, rolling her arm around in its socket. Nice and fixed.

Really though, what is her story? I won't pretend I know many Eastern languages, but I'm pretty sure that was Japanese. Sure as hell a long way from home then, isn't she?

Her face creased a little with concern.

"I have no idea, I only met her a short while ago, at a store. She pointed a shotgun in my face, and led me here... Luckily, it seems I've managed to run into better company, like you and the paramedic there."

Thanks, but don't get used to it. Plenty more raiders running around. Like Hell's Pork Chops and Scalps over there.

Her hand instinctively wandered to her gun, hovering inches above the leather holster. We need to ditch them. Fast. I don't know what this Compound is, but if the people there are anything like those two, something tells me we'd be safer with the flesh jockies.

Arnold paused, then lowered his voice into a whisper.

"Like, right now? Are you saying we should take this Ambulance and drive off?"

No. Bad idea. We still don't have your girlfriend and her new tagalong yet. Besides, if we left now, they'd just follow.

Chewing on the mashed end of the pen, she scrawled, Commit this to memory, because I'm going to destroy it once I'm done writing. We're both in agreement they need to go, right? Then here's what we do. We wait. Sooner or later, we'll have an opportunity. Wait for them to slip up, till they need us, then we dash. We make it look like an accident, so to speak. Nod if you follow.

She ripped the sheet of paper, crumpled it into a ball and shoved it in her mouth, chewing thoroughly. There could be no evidence this conversation ever happened.

Arnold nodded.

"Ok... and by the way, that Japanese girls is NOT my girlfriend. I've never had a girlfriend, and the fact that everyone is dead now doesn't exactly help my chances."

Relax. Plenty of fish in the sea. And hey, you're not a total asshole. Believe it or not, that's a thing women like in men.

Cut cleaned and bandaged, Sharon decided it was high time to do a maintenance check on her other gear. Unholstering her pistol, she eyed the safety, making sure it was stil engaged, and ejected the magazine. She'd used about five rounds in the Walmart, so that left her with two bullets in the magazine. She began absentmindedly thumbing bullets into the magazine, crunching the numbers in her head. It had been three weeks since she'd lubricated and cleaned Iokheira, and in that time she'd fired about 276... no, 288 rounds. At the earliest, it's need maintenance done in a month.

She continued rifling through her pockets for a few seconds, and then, like a dud firecracker, finally processed what he'd just said. Sharon blushed furiously, scrabbling to get a grip on the paper. What came out was barely legible, but read something like this:

It's not that I don't like you. Really, I'm not saying that in the dodge the question kind of way! But don't you think that's a little sudden?!

Arnold took Sharon by the hand.

"Sharon, the world just ended... and just beforehand I was planning on killing myself. But now, I've been given a new lease on life... strange, I know, but I plan to live life to the fullest. Plus, I really like you."
