Going to bump this thread,because I'm curious.
I've played Diablo 2 but never Diablo 1 and I'm curious about it,how do they compare?

Oh, bother.
Worse in pretty much every way. Diablo II improved on damn near everything in the first game.
Not to say Diablo I was a bad game per se. Diablo II was just so much better.

Diablo 1 has perhaps one thing over Diablo 2.
If you're one of those players that thought Diablo 3 was too shiny and colorful, and lost most of the darkness that made the series great, then you'll love Diablo 1's atmosphere. The change in tone already started in Diablo 2, but nobody cared back then because of the massive improvements in gameplay that M84 mentioned.

I definately can see the appeal in the darker atmosphere,but the gameplay improvements in the second game make me reluctant to try it

I still get annoyed by how off the scale is for Starcraft as a series...
