DOWNVOTE ALL THE THINGS!!!
Please.Voted it down coz I find it awful looking too. Heck, the last panel, I can't even tell wtf was drawn.
I'm not a fan of the art style either, but I think it's probably the best we have so far. It's clear (you see the brand, and the text clearly explains what it signifies), and it isn't potentially NSFW (which is my problem with the ass picture).
I don't really like any of the available options, but my complaints with that picture are purely aesthetic; there's no reason not to use except for the art style, and I don't think that's enough to downvote it.

Reaction Image RepositoryThe Devianart picture isn't NSFW. It shows as much ass as you'd see going to the beach or to a public pool. Seriously, if I was going to go for the (stupid IMHO) NSFW argument, I'd say the manga one is worst, since the woman's clearly implied to be topless.
For me the fact I can't tell wtf is going on in the bottom panel means it is no better than the original image + caption. The only change is you've changed the caption for a drawing no one can make out, and the same text that was in the caption.

I don't know how you can't tell what's going on in the second panel; she's explaining the brand while a snake puts her coat back on. Pretty simple.
I don't get what's confusing about it. First panel: Shows the brand and says what it is. Second panel: Explains what the brand signifies.
As far as the NSFW goes, I think that Sexy Back is lower on the scale than a thong. Then again, I don't think either one is NSFW, I just think that it might be a potential problem.
Reaction Image RepositoryI voted it down because I'm a firm believer in the values extoled on the Please God Anything But Another Anime Or Manga Image Dont We Have Enough Of The Farking Things Already page, which doesn't actually exist but should.
By the way, you used "Begs the Question" incorrectly. Begging the Question is when you make a positive statement that assumes in its premises facts that have yet to be shown true.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope. If an image is good, it's good. It doesn't matter if it's anime or manga or whatever. We have plenty of comic and movie and game images on here as well.
I don't care it's anime. I care that it's bad and looks like shit.
Not really.
Depends on how you define "good", now doesn't it? By the definition I use, the image you are promoting does not qualify. And I wasn't the one who said that the image was "good" because it came from a manga, you were.
Actually "looks like shit" is only the third reason I have for not liking it. The second is "inherent fricking incomprehensibility".

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope. Then vote it up? You saying "Not really" will not spontaneously change my whole perception of the image and make me alter my vote... No offense.
Honestly, none of the image really blew me away, so if we end up with no image coz they all are in the red, I won't shed a tear.

I'd still like an action shot of someone being branded.
Rhymes with "Protracted."In that case, here's Hancock being branded. You don't actually see it touch flesh, but...really, that might be for the best.
I actually like the "Boa with context" pic, and that's saying something because normally One Piece pics are like a cancer to me. I didn't have a problem figuring out what was going on in the second panel.
It's way early, but if we don't get something in the green after a week or so, this will probably turn into a "see Image Links for examples" page like Evil Eye was heading toward.

Well, I'll add the new version to see if having an image with the branding process fares better.
Whoops, double post.

The problem with the anime pic is that, while it's fantastic for showing the branding, there's no definite "slave" context.

Nah, I think the branding pic doesn't demonstrate the trope as well because we don't know why she's being branded.
Reaction Image RepositoryUh...she's in chains?
I know JAFAAC's should be avoided, but sometimes a little bit of a leap of logic should be allowed. Girl is in chains, being branded, she is slave. Pretty simple.

You ARE aware that in many medieval times, it was custom to brand criminals right? So when they served their terms, people would know the crime the committed when they saw them.
So chains does not necessarily mean slavery. For all I know, she's a criminal.

Exactly.
Or she's just kinky enough to be into branding.
Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.I'm more concerned with the fact that it just doesn't look very good. *shrug*
Rhymes with "Protracted."
Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
Nope.
Which begs the question why it's getting voted lower than the awful Deviant Art image.
