The resolution may be a problem later, but there wasn't really anything in this episode that was particularly harmed by it

Alright, watching it now. Just gonna download UTW's subs when they're out for the hell of it.

I... honestly didn't even notice while I was watching, but I can understand waiting for higher quality.

Am I the only one weirded out by Risei and Tokiomi circling around Kotomine while talking?

I noticed that. It's a part of the thing where Risei thinks he understands his son and... well, he doesn't. At all.

More comments:

• Rin. She is fucking adorable.
• I think I've gotten way too used to Kariya's disfigured appearance.
• Just how far in advance does the Grail choose the people who would have the Command Spells?
• The translation is much better than I expected, but the way they translated Rin's lines struck me as a little awkward.

I think the Grail picks the most likely candidates about a year in advance.

I'm having trouble finding numbers, but it's from about a year in advance, right up until the grail war starts.

Come to think of it, what was the signal for the war to begin again? Was it all Masters being chosen?

Yeah, that was it. Unless Kirei was lying at the beginning of Fate, but... I can't remember anywhere else that it's explicitly noted.

But that's weird. Looks like Kirei had the command spell three years in advance, while Kiritsugu had nine years (Kiritsugu should be an exception since the Einzberns were the ones who prepared the Command Spell system, though).

It may be three years but definitely not as long as nine.

It's basically accepted that the champions (or strongest Magi) of the three main families will be masters, so after Kiritsugu was accepted as an Einzbern they started making plans with him.

Similar thing with Rin who always knew she would fight in the Holy Grail war (well, after this grail war anyway) so she was always preparing for it.

Kiritsugu didn't have the Command Seal nine years ago. He married into the family, thus becoming an Einzbern. The three families are all guaranteed a position assuming they have a member to compete. Once he basically became the heir and most capable member of the Einzbern, as well as the only one with a wish, he was sure to be chosen eventually.

Kayneth appears to have known well in advance he would be competing, which appears to be because the Mage's Association is also guaranteed one member. Waver Velvet, on the other hand, was not chosen until the war had damn near begun already and... crazy serial killer guy just summoned a Servant without being properly chosen. I think. I don't really remember beyond him finding a grimoire.

Derp. I think I just forgot that the command spells are on the left hand, not the right. What's the tattoo on Kiritsugu's right hand then? The cross mark, I mean. A magic crest?

Just something he wrote it in pen. Whenever it begins to fade he redraws it. He thinks it makes him look cool.

Seriously, though, it shouldn't be his Magic Crest as that's only supposed to appear when the magus is using it.

WELCOME TO THE NASUVERSE.

It's not like I'm a total Nasuverse virgin (yaaaay KnK!), it's just a lot of the verse's All There in the Manual content and slightly more horrifying alternate endings are lost on me for not having played the games.

Yeah, loli Tohsaka was rather cute. Too bad she hasn't yet learned to be a troll, but I guess these things take time.

Hm, I dunno if Tokiomi is exactly a douche. I'm not saying he definitely isn't, mind you, just that he always seemed more oblivious than malicious to me.

I haven't read the novels, but from what I've heard this will be a pretty dark story, after all Gen didn't believe in happy-ish endings until Madoka. Hope Waver makes it out alive, seems like the kind of guy that would change the magus association for the better even if he is pretty haughty right now. Edit: Then again since the grail war will happen again, I guess nothing changed.

It's certainly on the dark side, yes. Mostly when Kiritsugu gets in on the action.

Ah, yeah, the author's notes state early on 'Hey, guys, don't forget: Pretty much everyone is going to die. This is the Grail War, remember?'

He didn't have to make it a downer. We already knew that it was one from FSN. Obviously, Tokiomi never comes home to Tohsaka, Kariya fails to save Sakura, Saber isn't saved etc. etc.

Hm. The opening/ED theme is strangely fitting, but still kinda weird. Kinda like how trollish Madoka Magica's was.

Ah Arha, I know almost everyone comes here after either seeing Fate / Stay Night or even reading Fate / Zero, but I think we should leave talk of what hasn't happened yet in this time line in spoilers.

KSPAM if I read it correctly hasn't watched or played Stay Night so that's rather spoilery on the nature of how things get fucked up.

Yay for the UTW subbed version being out!

Hey guys, I know you all read the novels and are all super excited and want to say "Oh, I can't wait until they do X or Y thing" and all those other things fans say when they discuss an adaptation of something they've already watched/read. But seriously, no unmarked spoilers...

... I'm not sure about Fate Stay Night spoilers, since the whole show will obviously be full of them.

I can't wait til they g-AHH NO!! DON'T EAT ME!!! ARGHHH!!!

And I believe command seals can be on any part of the body. I think Rin had it on her forearm or something.
