Not really. I think the consensus is this is the NRA desperately trying to rally support in the face of liberals not giving a shit about gun control laws anymore.

I'm curious, does the NRA run an election or something? That would answer why a crazy person is in charge. I mean, the crazy dude spouting off conspiracy theories is more likely to be supported if it requires actual effort to vote for him.

The NRA's director is chosen by a board of directors. so basically he's a mouthpiece for the interests of those mysterious 76 people.
