I don't know much about the Captain America series, other than that it's a Marvel Comics series whose hero is very patriotic and whose villain is a Nazi yet is evil even by Nazi standards.

I wanted to learn more about the series; would the movie be a good way to? (I found myself using movies to learn other superhero comic series, like watching Chris Nolan's Batman movies or the first two of Sam Raimi's Spider Man movies.)

It's certinaly a good way to learn about the character, his background etc. Just don't rely on any of the specifics of the film being true for the comic, there are of course changes made in the film. And there's a lot more background to the comic, Captain America has fought many more villains than shown in the film for example. Also bear in mind the vast majority of stories take place after he is unfrozen.

Like the previous posters yeah pretty much. It works out most of Cap's back story but ends on him in present day. So expect TheAvengers to continue Cap (and everyone else's) story to be played out.
