This is silly. What happened to good-old-fashioned mp3s?

MPlayer can play mpeg-1's. mpeg-1 may not mean what you think it means, though, since mp1, mp2, and mp3 all are classified as mpeg-1.

(IIRC mp3 means the third layer of an mpeg-1 file.)

I have this stupid mp3 song that requires me to use iTunes to listen to it, but apparently that's the only thing that can play it, even my ipod can't read it.

WHY DO PEOPLE USE THIS FILE?!?!

An ipod should be able to play anything downloaded from itunes. It sounds more like the file is corrupted. Since you have already paid for it, download if from a peer-to-peer system.
