I feel like that was Joe just playing up his persona. Joyce has a point, he took her out on a date, when he'd never do that for any other girl. He's the kind of guy who just wants a hookup, so why go through all the trouble for Joyce? A supposed "4" in his view?

Because he thinks it's an accomplishment if he puts in enough work to get someone as sex-averse as Joyce to sleep with him.

I guess the 4 is because she looks kinda frumpy at a glance, but further interaction added adorableness and challenge.

Eh, his reaction in this strip indicates (to me at least) that there's more to it than that. It feels like that was him playing up his horrible personality, and that he actually thought something completely different about Joyce.

Of course, Joe really could just be that terrible of a human being.

To me, his reaction in this strip indicates that it is exactly as he said back then, and he's fully aware of how shitty it would be to say that to her face.

If I have to say it again, I will: the only things drawing me to this strip now, since I first found it in 2013 was the likes of Blaine, Ryan, and Ross, I know why, but I can't find a word for it. If I can give myself any hint as to what the word for my selective interest is, it's that simple comeuppance or even mere death will not bring me any satisfaction beyond "oh cool, antagonist defeated"^note read in Dull Surprise, I want something that will turn Catharsis Factor into Nightmare Fuel.

Considering how much of a hypocrite Mary already is (just like in the other universe), I can actually see her being very happy with a high ranking.

Though she is Joyce without any reedeeming qualities, so it'd be hard to see how she even could rank higher on Joe's list.
