I thought the averted-hard wording was for tropes whose absence makes a work darker or edgier than it might otherwise be; such as the idea that Never Say "Die" is averted hard by The Lion King, etc...

@25 True... this is leading to my upcoming, hopefully blockbuster essay, "Adverbs and You: How to use adverbs on TV Tropes without causing cleanup efforts."
