I am working on a fanfic for Hetalia currently involving an oc called Black America or by her human name Addy.I just started the first chapter in a series of drabbles concerning her life.I was wondering how carefully I should make sure she is prevented from becoming a mary sue and how much black stereotypes can I used without it being offensive.

I want some stereotypes in her charater but not to a insulting point that it is not funny.Hetalia plays with stereotypes but they also have fun with it.

Why would there be a separate character for this?

Well, it sounds like it could be interesting. That said, given the minefield of a topic you're dealing with, you're not going to be able to keep it from offending everyone, and whoever you offend will flame you into oblivion (even just for the crime of depicting a racial group as a single person at all, even if you make it a Mary Sue).

I was thinking that Black America or Addy as I call her she would like South Italy is to North Italy.Unlike South Italy, she is not related to America(Alfred) and is actually related to the West African countries. She was bought as a slave by Britain to be a companion to America.Their relationship with each other starts out as a master and slave one then enters a master and servant and finally husband and wife. The reason why because first is slavery then is segregation finally in the civil rights era where she would finally be able to marry Alfred in 1967.

@ Tarsen

To me, it depends on a lot of things. But I'l boil it down to this: Is the writet saying that all characters of a certain group are X? If so, then it's bad.

For example, if you had a Yamato Nadeshiko and a The Lad-ette, just because the Yamato is a stereotype of women doesn't make her a bad character. It's if you say, well, since she's a Yamato Nadeshiko, all women are...then it's bad. People in Real Life are all varied, and fiction should show that IMO.

@ OP

Although it's been said, just be careful. Lots of people take stereotypes to be instantly offensive and off-putting, so be careful.

I totally hate my avatar. Just saying.

I love the idea because I love Hetalia. Avoid depicting her as a criminal or junkie, though. As for fried chicken and watermelon and grape soda, it's all good yo. Also, she should probably be a quick-tempered person, not because she's black but because she's a black woman.

Black + Woman = Strong Personality!!!

She'd almost be the opposite of Yamato Nadeshiko.

I already have a fanfiction called Black America:Black and Beautiful on fanfiction.net which will depict Black America's life from slavery to the civil rights area.He personality when she was young is more softer than the personality she will develop in the future mainly because she is a slave and would get punished if she was more rebellious.
