You ahve to remember that Churchill probably didn't know about what Stalin was doing.

Thing is, Stalin could be very charming if he wanted to. It worked brilliantly on FDR and not quite as well on Churchill.

He must have been to get the power and work his way from Georgia.

Churchill wanted to attack in Greece to liberate those regions before the Iron Curtain fell. He couldn't have been too chummy with Stalin.

Politicians have a remarkable ability to look like the best friend of someone they despise. Britain was prepared to deploy a full attack on the Soviet Union after the war.

We really weren't chums.

The only reason Operation Unthinkable didn't end up going ahead was that everyone was too exhausted to fight, and by the time everyone was ready to pick up arms again nuclear weapons were firmly in everybodies hands, and nobody would move a muscle for fear of them.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

I'd say that the main reason Unthinkable didn't get off the ground was that it would have been one of the biggest military disasters in history.

Note that I said that it wasn't personal, not that they were actually the best of friends. They trusted each other about as far as they could throw each other - and as Churchill was a somewhat portly fellow, that wasn't much.

[up] Also Churchill really really hated Communism.

A quote from the other wiki

A major preoccupation of his tenure in the War Office was the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War. Churchill was a staunch advocate of foreign intervention, declaring that Bolshevism must be "strangled in its cradle".[81] He secured, from a divided and loosely organised Cabinet, intensification and prolongation of the British involvement beyond the wishes of any major group in Parliament or the nation—and in the face of the bitter hostility of Labour

From that, I really doubt they liked each other. They probably tolerated each other through gritted teeth and FDR acted like peacemaker.

Churchill had actually mellowed since the intervention in the Russian Civil War by the time of the Second World War, even going so far as to joke with Stalin during the Second World War that Britain was becoming "pinker". The distrust from that incident was more lasting in Stalin than Churchill.

How do you count? Let's see.

Hitler started the most bloody war in history and destroyed several millions of his citizens. His bodycount is something like 40 millions people, half of them are Soviet people. Stalin started one local war and destroyed several millions of his citizens, he has several millions of frags. Hitler has higher bodycount but what the hell, you can't check morality by bodycount. Bush started a war that killed "just" several hundred thousands people, but you don't say he's better than Hitler 200 times and better than Stalin 10 times.

Let's talk about ideology. Hitler has rhetorics of hate, Stalin has always talked about welfare and happiness of poor men, about peace etc. Nobody cares anyway. Let's see results. USSR has made a greatest leap in history and fought the most advanced nation of the time while all other countries hated USSR and didn't want to help it. So being paranoid killer he in the end saved the country from destruction (Hitler's plans on USSR were pretty clear) and made life in USSR much better than it ever was. Current Russian government failes were he prevailed: Russia lost more people in last 20 years than in WW 2, life of most people is significaly worse than it was 20 years ago. But yeah, no repressions.

By the way, many countries of the time (Spain, Chile etc) had much bigger repressions. Nobody remembers them cause there weren't countries you want to loot with justification.

Agreed. Reading through the above this thread was clearly a shitshow last time it was active, and it's still drawing Stalin apologia now. Someone lock the damn thing.

I'm just surprised someone took the time to hunt down and necro-post here after nearly six years of inactivity.

Acally six years, the lasts post before the necro was 2011.

Now I'm wondering, if left open long enough this thread should draw more than just Stalin apologists right? It should also draw Hitler apologists?

Is there a law of dictator apoliga? There should be.

[up][up] I see your ninja edit. tongue I got the time wrong myself a few second ago, I keep forgetting it's not 2016 anymore.
