savage- there not telling them what to do overseas, there telling them where they can't go. Some people still go to Cuba VIA other nations, like Jamaica.

[up] And they're prosecuted if they get found out.

Once outside the US's borders, people shouldn't be subjected to US law anymore. Americans' actions outside of the US are none of the government's business.

[up][up]As long as you're an American citizen, you're beholden to American laws.

And if the government's responsibility to defend you ended at the borders, we wouldn't be able to save you if another country decided to fuck with you.

It is the government's job to defend and protect its citizens wherever they may be. Otherwise, the very idea of "citizenship" is meaningless.

The meaning of citizenship is not based on protection/security alone.

...yes it is. Not necessarily military protection, but in a broader sense.

A nation that does not defend the life, limb, and property (in that order of importance...) of its citizens isn't doing its job and either needs to be completely reconstituted or overthrown and redrawn from scratch.

That, in a nutshell, is Cuba... or, for a more pertinent example, China. However, lifting the embargo would make it easier to strangle the government there into doing its damn job, so...

Honestly guys, at this rate, by the time the US lifts the embargo, Cuba would have put through China-style reforms and become owners of some portion of our debt.

I'll laugh when that happens too, cuz it was entirely our fault for carrying on with this relic policy of the Cold War now twenty years too long.

Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...

[up][up]Not on that alone.

Being a citizen of a country is more than just what you get from the country. It's as much what you do for the country, and how you participate in the life and culture of that country.

If you ask me, there's no "meaning" in citizenship without taking both sides of it: the rights, and the duties. They go together. The right for protection, and the duty to protect, if you want to limit yourself to looking at security. You could find similar right-duty relationships for every function of a state and of an individual.

That's what I meant when I said citizenship doesn't mean protection alone.

And that, I hope, is that for this derail.

yea, embargo is good on nations like north korea and iran, because they are activly a mild threat, but cuba is little like them. its deffinatally not helping. besides, you drop the embargo and there will be a ton of money into the country instantally. pretty much every car is an american classic that all sorts of people would pay a shit load of money for. just all the screw up from all the money from that might knock down the right domino.

All those jury-rigged American classics from The '50s... *begins salivating*

The Cubans would be glad to swap'em for any semi-modern car... You could get true old-school jewels if you traded them for a '90s Honda accord.

That's reason enough to lift the embargo.

USAF- thats the thing, people dont buy classics becuase there in good condition(though that does make them better), they do it to restore them. most of them have been overloaded, switched engines, used and abused since they were made. its the ULTIMATE restoration project. every guy that wanted one would pay for it. obviously, if you wanted to take advantage of this, you'd wait till the economy is up high again and people have money to spend and then, POOF virtually ever cuba family would get a nice chunk of money, there economy would go nuts for a while. hopefully, long enogh to get the wheels a-turning(no pun intended) before it all settles down.
