[up][up] They make a good point. If a work is ruined by someone else explaining its flaws, then it's either because you're very weak-willed or because you don't really like the work. And really, is it such a bad thing to realize that you don't like something?

if opinions where wrong, then no one could rightfully say that opinions are wrong, because that would be wrong (?)

But now answering to the context of your post, maybe you should set ur own standards with out given that prerogative of your consciences entirely to some one else.

It might also be because you like bad stuff...

Keep lurking.

Hold up, that SA thread... isn't Miijhal one of ours? Just curious, I thought I saw the name before.

Also, I agree with basically all that you've said, Heartbreaker.

YES.

Look, if I thought I liked something before, but then I realize that I don't like it, then its pretty much ruined for me from then on. I'd much rather think that I like something than realize I don't like it.

That sounds like there might be an underlying problem...

Ultimately, this brings us down to what is probably the single most essential question in human understanding: "What is truth?" For if we hold that there is such a thing as truth, we are left to question whether truth has inherent value. For if we are to appreciate a work, we can ask whether we appreciate it out of knowledge, or out of ignorance-that is, whether our appreciation for it is hardened or harmed by this essence known as truth. If you believe truth to have an inherent value, one's appreciation being harmed by the truth is a necessary expense, for having an educated position-that which brings us closer to the truth enlightens us.

But if truth is merely useful in modeling the world because it helps us make that world a better place, then that truth simply reduces one's own enjoyment. In the absence of the value of truth, absent its functionality, indeed-becoming alerted to that which causes you to lose interest in an object is merely a source of despair.

If you stop liking things so easily.

Then I recommend you try to make your own movie, anime, manga, comic, fanfic, youtube videoblog, blog, sketch comedy, morning news show etc...

Once you see how much work goes into every one of this things and how hard is to come up with good ideas that do not have any flaw then you will start to apreciate things a little more.

Hell! I once helped a friend make a commercial, and now I like commercials better.

So you prefer to delude yourself instead of learning what your actual feelings and tastes are......

Houston, we have a bigger problem.

I have no problems with opinions.

My problem is how they come up with the opinions or how misinformed they are. Anti-Shurtugal is a great anti-Inheritance site because it's substantial and you actually learn a lot outside of why the book sucks (e.g. how to write properly). Busy Street is essentially just a troll site.

So what if it ruins the thing for you? What's so bad about ruining something that you think sucks anyway?

[up] Is it just me, or has the word 'troll' begun to mean, well, anything and everything?

I usually refer to trolls as people who are malicious.

It only sounds like a problem when you phrase it in such a way as to give the false impression that his preference is universal, rather than relevant to the specific context of works of entertainment.

But if truth is merely useful in modeling the world because it helps us make that world a better place, then that truth simply reduces one's own enjoyment. In the absence of the value of truth, absent its functionality, indeed-becoming alerted to that which causes you to lose interest in an object is merely a source of despair.
Indeed. At least, assuming you actually want to enjoy things. On the other hand, scrutinizing an object to the point of losing interest in it is useful if emotional detachment is your goal.

[up][up] As long as it's someone's actual opinion, rather than something just intended to piss people off, I'm fine with it. So yeah, that definition fits. (Though from what I've heard of it, it really just sounds like Busy Street is taking the piss)

Why is it that people seem to think that the truth reduces your enjoyment? If you don't like something, just find something else. Maybe the problem is that people tend to get really attached to certain works, and don't want to switch to other, better forms of entertainment.

I see no one took the essential metaphysics point seriously.

It's not a problem if you'd prefer not to know what your preferences are, unless you hold truth to have inherent value. If the intention is to "be amused," or have the maximum amount of enjoyment from existing media, then getting to the truth of the matter-finding out what one's preferences really are-can actually be counterproductive. That being said, in the long run, truth tends to be more effective at fulfilling that goal anyway.

^^Good follow-up.
