Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Because everyone friggin dies. At least Nebula's likely alive and bearing a grudge in the sequel. Too bad she and her sister were so lame.

I think your attempted link should work if you remove the apostrophe. Nevermind, here we go. Potential future plot spoilers: This link should hopefully work.

They could do Cancerverse stuff if they wanna get a bit... weird.

Might require too much furious expositing though. I'd like to see the MCU take on the cosmic horror. I guess the Aether thing could have counted actually.

I was able to confirm what a friend told me months ago from meeting him personally: James Gunn is a misogynist. Really, I'm surprised by Zoe Saldana for letting all that get on film. Does she really want to be a sci-fi action female lead that badly?

Yeah...I was afraid that was going to come through after I saw that list of his from awhile back. And an article I read recently has him downplaying the contributions of the (female) screenwriter who, from what I saw, appears to have laid all the groundwork for the film and whose script was what convinced the higher-ups that Got G was a feasible project.

So eh.

I don't know all the deets. I heard about it when thumbing through various Marvel AUs and some more about it when I was reading a GOTG trade.

Basically, it is a universe where life has beaten Death to death. This is a bad thing. It may tie into the whole Death of Captain Marvel thing.

When a war between the Shi'ar and Kree accidentally a hole in the universe, the cancerverse tried to come through to the 616 reality to 'save' it.

Here's a link.

Yep. Captain Marvel(the male one) accepts the offer of life from a bunch of cosmic horrors to survive cancer. His universe then tries to expand into the normal one.

The story is pretty much impossible at this point in time since Thanos is a BIG player in it and the MCU hasn't shown Death yet.

From what I know of it, the Cancerverse is also tied into Shuma Gorath's ambitions, so they also have an in with it through Dr. Strange.

Also notable is that a cancerverse horror impregnated Worst Avenger Moondragon through her nose but she snorted it back out of the universe.

The fault into the Cancerverse was also caused by the war between Blackbolt and the other Inhumans and Vulcan, King of the Shia'r Empire(X-Men). I don't expect to see any kind of take on the Cancerverse on film anytime soon.

My one big gripe is that Gamora and the treatment of her is the worst thing in the movie. She may be up there with Fake!Mandarin as the most infuriatingly bad character in the MCU. I was able to confirm what a friend told me months ago from meeting him personally: James Gunn is a misogynist. Really, I'm surprised by Zoe Saldana for letting all that get on film. Thanks for the warning, wanderlustwarrior. Portrayal of Gamora was the main thing that concerned me. I won't go to see this now.

I didn't think the treatment of Gamora was THAT bad. There were a couple cringeworthy moments, but it wasn't egregious. She kicked as much ass as anyone else, she was as developed as any other member of the team, and she and Quill never kissed, thank god I think you're overreacting, person above me who freaked out.

What exactly was the problem? Is it that she doesn't follow the comic characterization?

So guys. I saw this movie.

It was good.

I was entertained for a majority of the movie. There were good things that made me laugh and as a movie poster once said, I will believe that a raccoon can have character beats.

The ending where they care bear stared Ronan to death with the infinity gem was so cheesy that I can't decide whether I hate it or want to give it friendly noogies. Its just... wow, that is one way to have an ensemble cast all get to help beat the villain. That sure is one way to do it.

Groot was pretty exceptional, although I suspect he was intended to be, given all the awesome stuff he got to do.

Interesting that they foreshadow Quill's dad. And called him something ancient. Weeeeird.

The Howard the Duck cameo. I hope that's just a fun little cameo because the thought of Howard the Duck having a movie or something in phase 3 makes me laugh so hard that I think I may die.

I wonder what they'll do for Guardians 2: Guard Harder. I wonder if they'll add more Guardians to the roster, as they are doing with the Avengers. If they do, I want to see whatsherface Phyla-Vell. Her powers are neat.

I just saw it and am relieved to say all (and I mean literally all) of the more... objectifying trailer footage of Gamora did not make it into the film.

I don't know why that person is saying Gunn is a misogynist. Well... he might be in his offtime, but not at all because of this film.

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

I just saw it. Loved it. Might be my favorite MCU film since Iron Man lack of satisfying stinger aside.

It really broke the mold and I would not hate Gunn directing Avengers 3 at all. And yes, they wisely cut the shots of naked Gamora in the trailer from the final film.

I'll leave people to make their own decisions about it when they see the film, but I should say that I don't think that she kicked as much ass as the rest. She only beat one named character, and even then it was due to heavy environmental support. I started getting visibly frustrated when she couldn't even beat Quill at close quarters.

As for my own thoughts on the character: she lost to pretty much everyone, got played up as naive or damsel in distress, got called a whore or had her supposedly negative sexuality alluded to repeatedly, didn't really do anything on her own, and even though the more objectifying shots were indeed left out (thank Thanos), the overtly physical, while also constantly being grabbed nature of most of her movements and the movements of others around her left me feeling gross. It's true that they never kiss, but they do come close because her personal space largely isn't up to her (though is anyone's?). And it's largely on the shoulders of Gunn, who both directed and co-wrote.

And I don't know how true this is to the comics, but there's only two female characters that Quill has any sort of respect for. This results in one good joke, and one immature habit on an otherwise likeable character.

I still think this was the best calendar year for MCU films. Cap 2 was just that great, and this movie was otherwise really good.

I'd say Drax was pretty well done, actually. And Batista only had like one line that felt like a botch, and it wasn't that bad.

I liked Yondu Udonta a lot. Especially his choice in weapon.

He likes to whistle while he works.

I learn that he was a member of the original/future team and him being supah OP suddenly makes a lot of sense. He's pretty much a war crime.

Edit: I am glad that the MCU is basically going with the Kree as the biggest dicks in space. Because the Kree are basically the biggest dicks in space.
