Go with whatever makes you comfortable. I had a similar problem with the story I'm working on right now, and I solved it by writing from the POV of The Ishmael, as the story worked out better when the reader didn't know the main character's motives right away. If you can do that in your story that might be another option to consider.
I'm making him a guy, along with switching some other characters. It has the added benefit of adding some more women, which was bothering me. (My thoughts: ... I'm a chick. *Why* are there so few women? This is kinda screwy...)
While that's not a bad idea, it doesn't work in this case. I'm hoping to make this into a comic-book style webcomic.
