One month into its theatrical run, and Jurassic World: Dominion looks like it will have the lowest box office take of the three Jurassic World movies. However, that statement comes with MASSIVE asterisks.

Jurassic World movies print money and Dominion is no exception. The first JW made $1.67 billion, and Fallen Kingdom wasn't far behind at $1.3 billion. The returns may be diminishing, but we're still talking about billion-dollar bank-breakers here.

And Dominion will probably be no exception. At the one-month mark, it's sitting at $348m domestic, which is just shy of Fallen Kingdom's $380m. Fallen Kingdom also had a 30/70 domestic/international ratio versus Dominion's 40/60, so Dominion's not making as much money in foreign markets.

With all that under consideration, I think $1.1-1.2 billion is probably a reasonable estimate for the movie's ultimate box office take. Dominion will probably be remembered as the lowest-selling Jurassic World film, while still making more money than other franchises could hope to ever see.

Yeah, that's paleontologically accurate. In the 1980's it was discovered that velociraptors have a special hollow in their thighbones, housing what's colloquially called the defenstration organ.

It do makes sense they don't see windows and crash/bump into them. Birds do that all the time

Tbf Jurrasic Park Raptors have always had issues. The most infamous of course is that their attack method of slashing with their hand claws in jump isn't possible as those claws aren't sharp enough for that (they could be for impaling but uh it's debatable.).

Raptors would have probably jumped onto their prey than used their wings to dig their foot claws deeper into it well taking bites from their mouths.

[up] In fairness, there was still heavy debate on what exactly raptors used their claws for when the novel and film came out. It wasn't till later when people were able to more throughly examine the bones that they came to the conclusion that they used them to pin their prey.

Today I learned that Therizinosaurus is an herbivore. Seeing it in the movie, I thought for sure it was another bipedal carnivore like T-Rex, Allosaurus, or Carnotaurus.

The Jurassic World Evolution 2 video game had to teach me that, no, Therizinosaurus fucking eats plants. I spent days thinking that T-Rex having its cohabitation dislikes as "Carnivores and Therizinosaurus" was a hilarious diss!

THIS THING EATS PLANTS. Why the hell does it look like that!? And why was it hunting Claire in Dominion!?

[up][up] It looked like that because it was believed to have lived a similar lifestyle to ground sloths and chalicotherium, all three would use their long arms and giant claws to pull tree branches to their mouthes as well as for defense. Some actually thought that Therizinosaurus's claws were too fragile to be used as real weapons but recent evidence seems to suggest otherwise. [up][nja]

As for why it stalked Claire? I'm guessing to subvert the tendency to protray herbivorous dinosaurs as docile and friendly. It's behavior isn't actually that farfetched, hippos have been observed killing antelope and other small herbivors for seemingly no real reason.

Dominion ends with the Giganotosaurus IMPALED on Therizinosaurus's claws like it's fucking Dino Wolverine! I'm kind of mad that this isn't a carnivore, and I have no idea who I'm even mad at: The universe, the movie, or me.

Tbf anyone whose seen a Bison charging or a Hippo rampaging knows that these guys can be just as if not more deadly than meat eaters so I kinda appreciate this more metal portrayal.

I also appreciate it. I just. Wish they could have done it in a way that doesn't feel like they're using Therizinosaurus as a surrogate carnivore? I guess? If that makes sense?

Like. The first time an herbivore gets treated as a genuinely dangerous animal, it's the one that looks like a T-Rex. And the way it's dangerous is by acting like a T-Rex. So it's easy to overlook the fact that it's a leaf-muncher.

[up] I imagine the reason Therizinosaurus in particular was picked was due to it's unique appearance, it looked very different from herbivores that we're used to seeing, modern and prehistoric. An attacking Stegosaurus or Triceratops wouldn't look to distinct from something like a charging rhino or horse but we're not used to a plant eater that'll use giant claws to eviscerate us. It's essentially a colossal goose or swan in terms of temperament and method of attack.

Well, it is a rare herbivorous theropod to be fair. That one weird distant cousin that stabs you with his finger claws, common stuff.

Though I guess calling them rare is a little wrong since there are plenty of herbivorous (or rather omnivorous?) theropods still around.

Is it treated at all like a carnivore?

I'm pretty sure it munches on some plants right after swatting that deer to the afterlife.

Therizinosaurus is shown munching on leaves and it's clear that the deer Rexy picks later on is the same deer that the Therizinosaurus killed, so it's clearly not killing for food.

I know some herbivores can be pretty aggressive, as pointed out earlier, but I like the idea that the behavior we saw in the movie was just because this particular Therizinosaurus is a jerk.

[up][up]Yes, the Therezinosaurus is seen eating some plants in the ground after it swipes the deer, so the movie leaves clear that this version of this dinosaur is still a herbivore like in real life, despite avoiding the franchise's more or less Herbivores Are Friendly tradition.

Like others said, many large herbivores can be much more dangerous than carnivores, like elephants, hippos, moose, rhinos, bulls etc. (In fact, hippos and cattle are some of the animals that kill more people per year on Earth), but I believe that specific Theri is even more aggressive and territorial due to being strongly implied to be blind. We can see its eyes are white as if it had cataracts, and it doesn't see Claire when she hides underwater. It even seems to have developed echolocation with its roars. Since it cannot distinguish what is a threat or not, it just swhipes at whatever is near.

Fun fact: Therizinosauria (the family that Therizinosaurus belongs to) are a member of Maniraptora, which makes them closely related to dromaeosaurids, troodontids and oviraptorosaurs.

I honestly loved that Therizinosaurus was an aggressive and assholish herbivore, Camp Cretaceous almost gave us a threatening herbivore with the Ouranosaurus but they chickened out by making them only aggressive because of Scorpios Rex

Yes, while we've had plenty of dangerous herbivores in the franchise, the Theri was the first time one was actually Played for Horror, which I also think it was a great change of pace.
