Looks kinda silly to me.

I remember there was an animated Doctor Strange movie not too long ago. I don't remember how good it was, but it got me interested in the character and it looked pretty cool, so that's something, at least.

but HOW?

Oh boy, there's already "controversy" over this because Tilda Swinton's character is portrayed by a white woman as opposed to a Tibetan hermaphrodite.

[up] Kind of a legitimate point.

Also. Hermaphrodite?!

Not so much the fact that she's being portrayed by a white woman so much as they have a white woman with a bunch of orientalist trappings still.

[up] Pretty sure that the fact that she's white is kind of the crux.

Well, yes, there's that, but some people have expressed that they would be fine with Swinton being cast if they were gonna get rid of the whole "MYSTIC ASIAN MASTER" thing wholesale.

Indeed. They have kind of a point because if it's in Tibet, in one of the most homogenous areas of the world, her being white kind of sticks out.

At the same time we really need to get over this racial bias garbage.

Though I am a little bit bothered by all the "they changed her race but is still acting out Asian stereotypes". Does she? I mean she is dressed like an Asian, but if she lives in Asia, it makes sense that she would wear some sort of local gear. And other than the dress, nothing she does strikes me as particularly Asian. She just does the usual wise mentor stick along the same line characters like Yoda, Dumbledore, Gandalf aso did it. It's naturally the same stick wise mentors use in fight movies, too, and said mentors are usually Asian, but I always thought that the idea that a wise mentor in mysticism has to be Asian is the stereotype and not the way they talk.

It would be even worse if she were a white person using an Asian accent and with her face done up to look more Asian, then people would be screaming cultural appropriation.

[up][up] Them being stereotypically Asian and casting a white person to play an Asian character are two different issues.

[up] 'Done up to look more asian' do you mean... yellowface?

Or CGI.

Which they actually considered for Scarlett Johansson when casting her as the lead role in the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie thing they're doing.

[up] Well now that's just stupid. You remade the story to be set in America and star a white lady, now stick with it.

Wait, the Ghost in the Shell remake is set in Murrica now?

I think I now know who Mikkelsen is playing. If I'm right, then I must say I'm a little offput that Marvel pulled another villain transplant on us (ie. "Stark-tron").

The hairstyle. The eye shadow. They're both pretty much spot on.

That seems incredibly unlikely. It's probably Baron Mordo. Baron Mordo is always Strange's Starter Villain in origin adaptations.

[up] We've already seen Baron Mordo. He's being played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Oh, that's right. Wait, this movie has two villains in it?

Never mind, then.

Baron Mordo's being played by Chiwetei Ejiofo, so that's not who Mads is playing. He's the green fellow looking back to the camera midway through the trailer. And it appears he'll be a good guy in this movie, or at least for most of this movie.

The best guess I've seen as for Mads Miekkelsen's character is Nightmare. They look vaguely similar and most importantly, Nightmare was the very first foe encountered by Doc Strange. It'd even match well with his shapeshifting room in the trailer, as it does look like the kind of thing one would see in a dream.

Oh, that's how the name is written. I was wondering...

I don't think that Mordo will be a villain in this movie. I have the feeling that Marvel has learned to stop wasting their villains and built them up over multiple movies instead of killing them off nilly-willy.

[up] What makes you think that? Based off of early reviews, even the villain in CW's a total waste.

[up] Considering that they didn't even use him in the promotion, I have the feeling that this is a case of a villain they simply introduced in this movie in order to properly use him later. Civil War doesn't need an end-game villain when the heroes keep fighting each other. And that would make Zemo the fourth villain already which was introduced in one movie for another movie...the others are Crossbones, Claw and Nebula. (Well, and von Strucker, but Whedon apparently didn't get the memo and wasted him).

I'm wondering if they're attempting to do to Mordo what DC tried with Sinestro. Introducing him as an ally in the first movie and sow the seeds for his betrayal in the sequel, though Sinestro never did get to go full evil as there was never a Green Lantern sequel.

I do lobe Mikkelsen's eye makeup. Looks creepy.

As much as that movie was a giant pile of fail, I did really like what they did with Sinestro and would entirely support Marvel doing the same with Mordo. Building up the character as a Face to make his turn to Heel more impactful in the sequel is a good idea for a movie that can more or less be expected to get a couple sequels.

It's rare to see a genuine Faceā€“Heel Turn which is a shame because they're so powerful.

Yeah that is my thought too. A lot of the MCU movie villains are actually a negative version of what the hero could be when he crosses the line. But so far we haven't really seen the process of crossing the line, with the notable exception of Loki. But Loki isn't a negative version of Thor, but the complete opposite of him.

And even Loki more turns from from a smaller scale asshole into a bigger scale asshole for sympathetic reasons, rather than having an outright Heel Turn.

Genuine, well written, Face Heel Turns, at least ones that aren't folded into origin stories or don't involve the supposed face actually being evil all along, are surprisingly rare in superhero movies (the only one I can think of is Two-Face in TDKR), so I'd definitely be down for seeing more.

And seconding Sinestro being one of the few big things from the Green Lantern movie that I'm disappointed we lost thanks to the rest of the movie being terrible. The other is Star Sapphire.
