Should they be listed alphabetically by wiki name, as they are now, or listed alphabetically by the topic name?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

I'd say topic, so we can split it up into nice little folders like on most tropes.

Topic also guarantees that multiple wikis about the same thing are grouped together, which is of the good.

I agree with the idea of sorting by topic since I think it makes it much easier for someone looking for a wiki on a specific subject matter since I feel like that is simpler than doing a CTRL+F search. It also helps out people who do not know exactly what wiki they are looking for and just want to look around a bit.

Hopeful bumping?

I've always thought this page should be sorted by either medium or genre, so yeah...

I'm going to have a shot at organising it into medium.

Hmm, did you want a hand with the organizing at all?

OK then, I'll see if I can work on it somewhat today. Just didn't want to step on your toes/cross you up.

Is organising by medium feasible?

Many wikis cover entire franchises, which exist across multiple media. For example, the Buffy/Angel wiki covers Live-Action TV, Film, and Comic Books, Memory Alpha has all those plus Western Animation, Wookieepedia has Film, Comic Books, Western Animation, Video Games, and Manga, and TFWiki has all the Wookieepedia media plus Anime. How do you decide which to list them under?

IIRC the rule on the wiki in general (?) is that stuff that talks about a franchise as a whole gets put under the original entry's medium. That's what we've been following with the whole Wick Namespace Migration project, at least. See here: [1] and here: [2]

So Wookiepedia would go under Film, Memory Alpha under Live-Action TV, anything Harry Potter under Literature, etc. Transformers, meanwhile, technically goes under Toys when talking about the whole franchise.

Buffy, though, is questionable, as it technically started with a Film but the broader universe is AFAIK almost entirely based around the TV series.

Still, I think right now the main thing is just to get everything sorted somehow; once we're done with that it'll be no big deal to debate some individual questionable entries. No matter what category system we choose there's going to be at least a few outliers.

...OK, I can already tell the Video Games folder is going to need to be subdivided even further. (Apparently gamers just love writing wikis...) Question is how: Alphabetical? Genre? Which system it's for?

Usually we go with genres for video game tropes, though we don't usually have to split them in non-video game tropes so I'm not entirely sure if that's appropriate.

[up]It doesn't matter if it's appropriate. It matters if it's necessary.

I think my thing was that genre splitting might result in more subdivisions than we actually really need. Right now it's about twice as big as the next biggest folder while I'm almost done up to F. Guess I could just keep going and see what the end result looks like.

OK, I think I've finished sorting everything at Sandbox/The Wiki Rule. Feel free to dither over anything I put in the wrong place or otherwise arguably goes in a different category.

Some thoughts:

  • I alphabetized by wiki name, which doesn't always equal alphabetized by subject. Should we do that instead?
  • There's some grouped sections like the DCU and Star Trek ones that we might want to break up when some of the listed wikis deal entirely with separate mediums from the original work.
  • Video Games could stand to be broken up into 2-3 folders, I think. I'd at least maybe separate out all Browser-Based/Web Games, as I wasn't sure whether they should go in Video Games or Web Original.
  • I'm wondering if we should separate Web Comics out of Web Original.
  • I'm a bit biased in the matter, I admit, due to being a TFWiki editor, but I feel like for any wiki which has moved away from Wikia, we should maybe just nuke the Wikia link altogether unless the Wikia version actually is a fully separate wiki.

The video game section could gets its own page at WikiRule.Video Games.

I'd support splitting Webcomics out of Web Original.

[up][up][up] It could, but I more wanted to break it up a bit to try to think of how to make that list a bit less daunting to skim through. A long list on a subpage is still a long list.

[up] Er, which ones? The only wikis I see on the list based on tropes is, well, us and our mirror, and I don't really think we need a folder for two wikis...

Oh yeah.

Make that, I'm not really sure we need a folder for three wikis. Though we could put the Fetish Fuel wiki as grouped with the two TV Tropes wikis.

I split out Web Comics already, BTW.

Any thoughts on my other points? If there's no real opposition or thoughts on the current state of the Sandbox, maybe we should consider porting it over after adding in any last minute stuff from the main article.
