Why do we have this?: Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans

A couple of things we need to remember:

1. This is not a tautology. "Most fanfic writers are fans" means "Most people writing about somebody else's published work enjoy that work." "Fanfiction" doesn't actually mean "Writing about somebody else's published work that is written by fans," just take a look at all the Twilight parody fanfic. It's clearly written by people who don't like Twilight, and it still counts as fanfiction, even though it wasn't written by a fan. So it's not at all a tautology; in theory a scenario is possible where NO Naruto fanfiction is written by any fans and all the Naruto fanfics are written by people making fun of Naruto because they don't like the series.

2. This trope explains that the particular part of a work that the fan enjoys will affect how said fan writes. For instance, a Hinata fan is more likely to write a story where Hinata is generally awesome and does awesome things all the time, which explains why she does things that a writer that doesn't really like or dislike Naruto would have gone with a more realistic depiction of her.

Not only is it not a tautology, but I'm not sure it would matter if it were. It's still a trope. The people who have been citing People Sit On Chairs seem to be misinterpreting that essay. Even if it were a tautology, it would simply be a Omnipresent Trope for Fan Fic (a, gah, "Necessary Weasel"), because it has an impact on the story. People Sit On Chairs is about things that don't!

I actually think this could be a great trope if the description was expanded a bit.

This. I think that there is a trope here, but it just needs to be better defined. Definitely voting for no examples, though...

Edit: I did a sandbox rewrite: Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans. Opinions?

[up][up] I like it as well, although it might be a little long. I do think this is a useful trope to have; it brought up ideas that I hadn't really thought through.

[up] Do you think? I figured, if this was going to be example-less (I would imagine so), the article could afford to be more comprehensive...

[up][up] Thanks.

[up] That was my thought as well. If we are going no examples, then it's not a bad length for a full page and it covers everything.

Indeed. I should probably go mention the concept of the Wreck Fic and Fix Fic, though...

Bump? I would like opinions on the idea of using this rewrite as the write up for the trope, so we can close this discussion down, if at all possible. Other rewrite suggestions would be welcomed, as well, of course...

Much, much better with that write-up USAF 713.

USAF 713,

I like the sandbox write up as well. I feel like it describes a lot of good storytelling stuff that the previous page did not and the length seems alright to me given that the page has no examples. I think you might as well go ahead and paste it in the Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans page at this point.

Very nice. Definiition, explanation and common results. I think you covered the basics very well. Adding more about Wreck Fic and Fix Fic wouldn't hurt, but I think that could be covered by a simple list of the types of fanfic and what the author's primary purpose is in each one.

Alright, I added in the rewrite, and [up] a section on each of those concepts. Any comments on the added bits, or otherwise in general would be appreciated. Otherwise, I guess we're done...
