Is there a text article version of that? Reading the top comments made me not want to watch it.

And this is just bad.

Forget it, Mercury. It's daytime television.

Please.

Pretty standard stuff really. F on M violence is always underplayed.

It's just tastelessness. Moronic, but not really worse than the usual "shock" humour about rape or violent crime.

Bit disheartening that somebody thought it was worth broadcasting, I suppose.

[up] Except that it played at 10 am not 1 am so it's apparently not 'edgy' humor but something that's totally acceptable for kids to watch. Little kids who also may have penes.

[up][up]Thank you.

On this episode, the hosts glorified the event, mocking the victim and delighting in his torture, fantasizing about what he might have done to deserve it, and generally behaving in an incredibly repugnant and morally bankrupt manner.
What he might have done to deserve it? He filed for divorce. She mutilated him, and for that? Maybe there were problems with the marriage, but he's the one that filed it.

As a general comment.... This site in general is actually very good about catching double standards in both directions instead of just one of them, and reacting with appropriate levels of disapproval. That's one of the things I really like about it - it makes bearing the assumptions of mainstream society so much easier to tolerate. In other venues, either this is either treated as normal, or people self-defensively overreact so far that it becomes discrimination in the opposite way.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

> Yeah, day-time TV is always this stupid. "Oh torture, how funny!"

Hm. Well... I've actually never seen day time talk show cover genital mutilation of women, or a woman, or the rape of women or domestic violence against women with quite the same level of sniggering.

So, yeah, I'm thinking there's something specific to this. Namely that it happened to a man.

>He filed for divorce.

As far as I know it's acceptable to file for divorce; not acceptable to fly into a jealous rage should your property—I mean partner—be leaving you. Also they apparently argued about him letting friends stay in the condo that he owned.

I mean that I "answered" their question regarding what he did to deserve what he got.

And not only that, maybe there were deeper problems with the marriage, but if that's the case, I would expect the wife to initiate the divorce.

>maybe there were deeper problems with the marriage

The problem with this line of thinking is that it's very easy for someone who is an abuser to project their abusive behavior on their abuse victim.

She may well play the abuse card to get out of whatever criminal charges she faces. Doesn't mean she was abused.

I'd probably be amused if it was a female victim, so I don't begrudge these women their schadenfreude. Sure, it sucks that men can't get away with the same brand of "tastelessness", at least not in the same context, but I don't want to fight this double standard by putting limits on what women are allowed to joke about; I want to fight it by taking away the limits on what men are allowed to joke about.

[up][up]Well I'm just giving the benefit of the doubt, in case I say "all he did was file for divorce" and then someone corrects me saying that it's not that simple.

But why did he file for divorce if he was abusive? So the evidence doesn't favor the woman here.

I have heard jokes about female genital mutilation. Though it was more about the strangely narmful way which it was presented.

I've joked about that recently actually. Involved my girlfriend and cutting off her clit in rage if she ever broke up with me.

In regards to the humor double standard and how to deal with it...I would prefer we deal with it by evening out the fucked up humor playground and letting both sides play with as few restraints as possible.

Indeed it is. I should try it sometime. I've already joked about raping, mutilating in other fashions, and eating strangers so why not add genital mutilation into my bag of over the top comments?

Because when you joke, you should take the responsibility to make sure you know who you're talking to.

It is disgusting how this brings out misogyny in people. I'm sure there will be sexist men out there who see this and confirm their suspicions about the vacuity of women.

Likewise, sexist women will no doubt laugh and agree with Sharon Osbourne. This is all a viscous cycle I wish would end. To be honest, I'm very perplexed by the attitude that if a woman beats up a man he must have deserved it.

You know, the only reason WNHaG should rightfully exist is because of the pretense that girls are weaker. If you object to that, then you give up your handicap protection.

But that warrants another thread.
