Ooh! In the Chicken Run sequel then Mrs Tweedy and her new husband have mind-control collars, sort of. I mean, they only work on chickens, but given that these chickens regularly outsmart humans, then... maybe they would also work on humans? Almost certainly not. But maybe.

I am glad that this is actually a debatable fight. One of the funniest bits to imagine is that in any fight animation, you would have to use the classic, most iconic Cruella, but you would have to give her the fighting skill that the Emma Stone variation has, so you'd have this lanky old woman who constantly gets outsmarted by dogs, raccoons, horses, etc, but also she can kung-fu a bunch of trained bodyguards into submission. And presumably then trip over a skunk and fall into a trough filled with manure.

This feels somewhat like the human version of Tom VS Wile E Coyote.

Cruella De Vil VS Mrs Tweedy

I wish this were a DB Extra.

Also, what do you guys think of Action Man vs Barbie?

Plankton (Spongebob Squarepants) VS Foo Fighters (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure).

If you know you know.

[up] I've heard suggestions of those two fighting a lead character from some movie called Small Soldiers.

So, can Action Man stack up to Barbie's 100+ job specializations and wish-granting powers?

Will the G1 blog continue for the time being?

In honor of Cruella de Vil getting mentioned here and because I enjoy this style of music, enjoy Roger's Cruella disstrack.

Frankly if you're like me and were introduced to 101 Dalamations by Kingdom Hearts then this song is going to slap like a Catholic nun.

I feel like Foo Fighters and Plankton would be at a stalemate. He can't do anything to them and they can't kill him due to toon force.

That was a good Wiz VS Boomstick blog. I'm glad that it just stuck to things they've done in episodes that weren't taken from combatants; I was worried that it would end up like "Wiz demonstrated Mario's power-ups so he gets those, while Boomstick held the Doctor's De-Materialize Gun so he gets that." Although there was that one quick mention of "Ringmaster avoided being shot by a sniper; Wiz should be comparable to this," which- why? Even in the finale, I can't escape from power-scaling. At least both Wiz and Boomstick got it though, making it a non-factor.

Also we could be talking about Foo Fighters - the stand from JoJo - for seventeen consecutive pages and every single time I saw the name, my mind would still default to the band. I feel like they would have a decent chance of beating Spongebob. How are you going to beat the guys who wrote Learn To Fly? It's impossible. You remember that they made Learn To Fly and all the will to fight just leaves you.

Plankton probably gets some insane physicals at one point or another, though I can’t remember any off the top of my head. Comically high durability if nothing else.

Though even if he doesn’t have the physical strength to take Foo Fighters (the character/Stand) out, he has made a lot of inventions, one of which I’m at least certain could get the job done.

In "Frozen Face-Off" Plankton got mad at the safe that was holding the Krabby Patty formula, and declared that he will tear it apart by hand, "bit by bit (tears a tiny chunk of the safe in two), molecule by molecule (snaps a cartoon molecule in two), atom by atom (snaps-in-two)". As in, he literally broke an atom in half, causing a nuclear explosion. He did also survive that.

The Wiz VS Boomstick cast is now airing.

They still cant say anything concrete about the future of the show, but there will be an official update video on the situation before Rooster Teeth fully shuts down on may 15th.

Also everyone on the team made clear that they want to keep on creating cool stuff and that they believe that there is still much more that could be done with Death Battle.

Finishing Season 1 of Death Battle.

Luke Skywalker vs Harry Potter to Master Chief vs Doomguy

  • THEME: The boy who lived vs The boy who also lived
  • Shatterpoint is such a broken ability for Luke to have.
  • This Death Battle has that early 2010's energy where the matchup feels like something you'd talk about with your high school friends.
  • Between Imperio and Avadra Kedavra I'm shocked Harry lost this.

  • The ad this time is for Carbonite (ha hah, Star Wars). I checked, and there is still a Carbonite mobile app.

  • FIGHT! So this time the fight just starts with Harry walking into a Star Wars SNES level and facing Luke. Really showing a lot of creativity here early Death Battle. XD
  • No pun intended, but shouldn't Expelliarmus have disarmed Luke immediately?
  • The killing blow was Luke using Shatterpoint to make Harry's scar burst, and then he impaled Harry with a spare lightsaber.
  • We're seeing Rooster Teeth ads back in the first season? I wonder if they were already purchased by this point?
  • Combatants possess knowledge of each other only if such is canon to each fighter's universe. The battle must end with a death, for fairness, any personality traits that keep combatants from killing will be ignored. I had to paraphrase because they had a link to Rooster Teeth's Last Laugh blocking the information.

  • THEME: Sexy video game females from well-known fighting game franchises.
  • This fight is essentially boobs vs legs with extra steps.
  • The ad this time is a PSA against drunk driving.
  • FIGHT! This fight, too, is just one character walking up to the other one and deciding to ruin their day.
  • We've got that early 2010's flash animation, but now its a little more fluid - Chun-Li and Mai jumping between trees, attacking one another mid-flight.
  • The killing blow is Mai feinting, kicking Chun-Li to the ground, and setting her on fire. Jesus.
  • Chun-Li was at a disadvantage due to Mai's nimbleness and firepower.
  • After this episode Death Battle was featured exclusively on Screw Attack.

  • THEME: (taken from the DEATH BATTLE wiki) The connections between Starscream and Rainbow are that they are both Hasbro-owned flyers with superb speed and a fairly large ego. Both are also members of a team (the Decepticons and the Mane Six, respectively) led by a strategic leader (Megatron and Twilight Sparkle, respectively), and both have the ability to control the weather. The two are also ironically opposites when it comes to loyalty (Starscream is known for constantly betraying Megatron, while Rainbow Dash represents the Element of Loyalty itself).
  • I think this is my favorite episode from Season 1 so far.
  • Starscream once possessed a robotic teenage girl and forgot to pull her panties up. This is why we watch DEATH BATTLE - for these fun facts.
  • The ad this time is... huh. There is no ad. I guess being on Screwattack meant they didn't need an ad sponsor?
  • FIGHT!
  • Starscream was not ready for this pony to throw hooves the way she did XD
  • The finishing blow was Rainbow Dash leading Starscream's own missiles into him, blasting him to smithereens. His Spark was ready to go on but Dash ate his soul. A pony just ate someone's soul.

  • THEME: The original FPS space marine takes on his modern-day successor in a brutal duel to the death! Can Master Chief survive a fight with Doomguy, the man who forced Hell itself to its knees?
  • If Death Battle were to get another season - this rematch is at the top of my list.
  • Chief and Doomguy are the epitome of video game badass with a ridiculously-sized arsenal.
  • The ad this time is Squarespace. Huh, that didn't last long.
  • FIGHT!
  • Chief and Doomguy meet in front of a Warthog jeep and just start going Second Amendment on one another. Chief leaps over a missile and hurls one back, throws a jeep, and goes invisible with an energy sword. This was before H Alo 4 mind. Doom Guy starts pushing Chief back with superior firepower and an invincibility power-up. Ha hah, Chief with his pistol and DG with his BFG.
  • I still say Chief would kick Doomguy's ass in a rematch, but I still want a rematch with new research and a better animation.
  • "This fight was nuts." Boomstick's puns weren't great back in the day.

Wily vs Eggman to Pikachu vs Blanka

  • THEME: Mad scientists from video games.
  • Probably my second or third-favorite after Starscream vs Rainbow Dash and Chief vs Doomguy.
  • The first (and only) army vs army battle.
  • There's a clip of Pharoah man decking Mega Man I'd completely forgotten about from the Ruby-Spears animated series.
  • No ad this time.
  • FIGHT! Well this one's an easy setup. Both armies marching into the same city and start fighting.
  • The killing blow was Wily throwing Roboenza at Metal Overlord, causing him to go rampant and destroy Wily and Eggman.
  • This fight was a "stalemate" but, honestly, Eggman has an air fleet and a space fleet now, so I'm pretty sure he'd have won out in the end.

  • THEME: Video game princesses from Mario and Zelda famous for being kidnapped.
  • The vibe scepter is a joke that writes itself.
  • The ad this time is for Jackthreads, a clothing supplier.
  • FIGHT! Both princesses walk to the same bridge and just start beating the crap out of each other.
  • The fight animation is getting decent now, but Zelda's model is clearly not a visual fit for Peach's. It looks like they tried to compress a much more detailed model of her from a 3D game and just ran with it.
  • The finishing move was gorgeous. Empress Peach Striker with an epic twist and landing. Seriously watch this clip of it.

  • THEME: Gods of thunder sworn to protect humanity.
  • At this point, Thor was the most powerful character featured on Death Battle.
  • The ad this time is for Netflix.
  • FIGHT! Raiden teleports in and starts flinging electric blasts at Thor.
  • So this one's a slight improvement of Peach vs Zelda, probably due to both characters having sprites from fighting games available. The combination of 2D animation and 3D effects, creative use of camera angles, particle effects, and having the battle's focus shift between each character makes this one of the first DEATH BATTLES that I would argue isn't hard to look at.
  • I really like the shot of Raiden hurling an arc of electricity at Thor around the 7:28 mark.
  • Raiden shocking Thor and Thor just tanking it was clever.
  • The finishing blow was Thor crushing Raiden's lower half then throwing him into the goddamned sun.
  • I take it back This is my favorite fight of Season 1. Unlike the later Goku vs Superman match the animation isn't too ambitious and makes good use of both character sprites, perspective, and there aren't too many moments where I notice the animator using the same pose to make up for all the action. I'll come back to this in Goku vs Superman, and I'll try not to look at battles in reference to future ones too much after this next one.

  • THEME: Blond RPG heroes from franchises that started on a Nintendo system.
  • The ad this time is for Gamefly.
  • FIGHT! Cloud and Link start in fighting stances with no reason given for their battle.
  • So good and bad here:
    • I like the use/visual references to both character's gameplay mechanics (attack name panels when Cloud uses Limit Breaks, Link's Z-button lock on when he parries Cloud's Omni-slash)
    • The fully 3D animation is a first, and it sort of shows. Link's posture is static whenever he uses his boots of speed, and we see Cloud's sword-arm locked in place whenever he dashes. The animation was a little bit too ambitious in my opinion, but points for effort.
  • The killing blow was Link evading and parrying Cloud's Omnislash Version 5 in midair. This is a Crowning Moment Of Badass.
  • The preview for the next fight is weirdly cut off, so I guess they were trying to be sneaky with their previews this time?

  • THEME: Comic book underdogs and mascots for rival comic book companies, both with "man" in their name.
  • The Youtube version of this fight loses audio until about 1:06.
  • Ah the golden-oldie about Spider Man shooting webs out of his butt that's been discredited several times in the past decade.
  • I know this is Boomstick and he shouldn't be taken too seriously, but Spider Man doesn't let the Spider-Sense do everything for him.
  • Spider-Man is weak to "pesticide" ethyl chloride. What. I'm thinking this should have been Adam West Batman vs Japanese Spider-Man. He could've had that in his belt.
  • The ad this time is for Audible.
  • After 2 good episode fight animations this one is kind of underwhelming. Cool shot of Batman having bats enter through a window, but the spritework is inferior to Thor vs Raiden, and there's this one really weird shot where Bruce deflects an explosion by crouching with his cape around him, and another where they use Spider Man's crouching animation as he bungees himself through Batman's midsection. Still better than almost every other sprite fight besides Peach vs Zelda and Thor vs Raiden.
  • The fight, despite Batman defeating the entire League on his own, did not have the time he would need to prepare against Spider-Man, and even if he did Spider-Man would've been given the same and would still out-stat Batman.

  • THEME: Electric Japanese characters from well-known franchises, beasts who act with more sentience/empathy than previously thought.
  • You know, the breakdown on Blanka makes me think he'd be a good matchup for Iron Fist, especially with the green aesthetic.
  • The ad this time is Carbonite.
  • FIGHT! The fight begins with both already getting ready to shock it out. The animation is a little better than Batman vs Spider Man with a lot more particle effects.
  • The finishing blow is sudden and makes the entire analysis feel inconsequential. Probably the first "stomp" match we've had here, as even Batman managed to put up a respectable fight against his opponent. In this, Blanka and pikachu get ready to have a big clash then suddenly its just over, Blanka bites Pikachu's head off, tosses him in a blender, and downs him like a smoothie.
  • Hah. Boomstick and Wiz both have audible reactions to announcing Goku vs Superman. Funny how they act like they didn't know the fight was coming.

I'll take a moment to recite the rules of DEATH BATTLE up to this point since last time it was obscured by an in-video ad.

    The rules:

  • Combatants possess knowledge of each other only if such is canon to each fighter's universe.
  • The battle must end with a death. For fairness, personality restraints from killing the opponent are removved.
  • All other character traits, tactics, and attributes are not removed and are attempted to be represented faithfully.
  • Research used is determined equally unless specified (eg. if non-canon sources are used for a combatant, the same is done for the other).

Now the finale:

    notes

  • You can already tell they're taking this series more seriously. The opening credits, the soundtrack, all before the Title Drop too.
  • THEME: East vs west? More like battle of the best! Who wins this legendary fight?
  • This episode is 32 minutes long.
  • love how in Goku's section they have techniques such as "After-image, Dragonthrow, Mimicry, and the legendary deadly Fist Shockwave." I sure remember spamming Fist Shockwave in Dragonball Budokai.
  • It is really weird how the Dragonball fanbase latched onto power levels despite power levels being relatively useless in the story proper.
  • I'm not sure what they mean by not powerscaling Goku. That seems to be exactly what we all do for characters now.
  • Ah the good old Kiai Cannon and Dragon Fist... wait that movie's not even canonical. Goku only uses it in Wrath of the Dragon and Dragonball GT!
  • Goku reading minds is such an understated ability in Dragonball.
  • Yep, Goku's willingness to let opponents go is an unfortunate intrinsic aspect of his character... don't think that'll affect this fight much though considering the rules Death Battle specifies.
  • Goku might be the greatest martial artist in fictional history... and then Iron Fist, Kenshiro, and Shang-Chi took exception to that.
  • Superman gave up his US citizenship!? When did this happen?
  • Heat vision drains Superman's solar power faster than his other abilities. Interesting.
  • No ad this time. The episode begins with Superman saving a downed airliner and the Z-Fighters dissing his performance. They're all pretty antagonistic towards him honestly. They use the Abridged voice actors for Krillin, Vegeta, Chi-Chi, Roshi, and Goku - brilliant move, highly recognizable.
  • Ha, the whole reason for this fight was Abridged Goku assuming that Superman's alien status meant he would destroy the planet.
  • Sidenote, the clip with Vegeta is taken from a different episode of Dragonball Z then the clip with Chi-Chi and Goku at Kame House. At this time, Vegeta was still fuming about his loss to 18 and Goku had to teleport to him.
  • Goku flies over to Superman on the nimbus and we have a change from the 2D animation of the show to 3D. Looks... adequate. Pretty accurate models for the characters.

    notes (cont)

  • FIGHT! Goku fires first and is not ready for all that Super-smoke.
  • Per Abridged Dragonball, Goku uses the Kaio-ken to catch Superman offguard. We even get a "Kaio-what?" before Clark gets decked.
  • Why would Goku even use the Nimbus or Power Pole for this battle?
  • Pretty cool shot after Goku first goes Super Saiyan and disappears in front of Superman only to reappear behind him.
  • Goku throwing a Kamehameha down on top of Superman only to find a single random piece of Kryptonite inside of a building's rubble is... one way to address Superman having kryptonite weakness. Though, if all personality restraints are removed, I feel like Goku wouldn't have ignored that rock.
  • Super Saiyan 2 doesn't feel all that different from Super Saiyan 1, so it's neat they decided to let Goku use the Power Pole for a bit.
  • I really like the shot of Superman catching the Power Pole and chucking it into space.
  • the animation is getting really intense - but there a couple of moments where you can tell the animator might have run out of time.
    • The first time Goku leaps from the building at 17:41 he makes a face as if he's been hit... before Superman actually hits him.
    • The part where Goku first does a spin kick, it looks like the same two poses overlapping one another. We see this a second time when Goku goes Super Saiyan 3. Dragonball is famous for reusing animation at certain points so I guess this is eerily fitting?
    • When Goku uses the Dragon Throw on Superman, the ground takes... no damage despite there clearly being clouds of dust to imply impact.
  • The animation of Superman is pretty good here, but his face/skin are really smooth and give him this plastic action figure look. It's more distracting because his character model never really changes throughout the fight.
  • Hah, Goku trying a solar flare on Superman... doesn't work at all. Good idea, just the worst person to try it on.
  • Superman turns around to block Goku's beam when he should have... just kept flying and dodged it. Whatever.
  • The usage of Ki-sensing, Superman flying across the world, absorbing solar energy and Goku absorbing it as well all feel like pretty classic Goku/Superman moments. Good creative touches for the battle I feel.
  • Dang, I have a lot more to say about this one than I have the previous fights.
  • Our finishing blow is Superman driving Goku into the center of the Earth after their beam struggle, Goku launching a Dragon Fist, and getting vaporized by Superman's Infinite Mass Punch which consequently destroys the Earth. Superman stares into the camera like a psychopath and we get a shot of him... opening his eyelids at 20 FPS for some reason.
  • The Board of Wizdom: Superman's power is insane and far too much for Goku. Goku would never have thought to teleport Superman to a red sun. Superman being strong enough to move the earth, and solar energy raising his power beyond that makes him stronger than Goku. Flying from the sun and back make him insanely fast. Dragonball is less clear with Goku's strength and speed and abuses "cinematic time."
    • cont - Wiz and Boomstick use the Gravity Formula and apply it to Goku just barely lifting 40 tons in his base during the Otherworld saga. Goku's speed is put at... sigh... continent level. Goku's travel time across Snake Way in base is mathematically calculated, and then they run the speed it took and multiply it by the gravity formula. They take the numbers on the bomb Gero intended to kill Goku, assuming those to be the minimum amount it would take to kill him, and multiply that force by Goku's super saiyan multipliers to determine what he could potentially survive.
    • Goku's ki output is compared as a reaction to what he can withstand.
  • At 31 minutes in Wiz reminds us that Goku and Superman are more than just characters, but the core theme of their characters are different - Goku has clear limits built into his thematic makeup while Superman does not. I can sort of buy this, sure, there's more times in recent media where I've seen Superman get wailed on. But, thinking on it, Superman films and shows aren't like Dragonball ones - Goku beats his villains by unlocking more power through training. Superman never really has to train. Not an absolute maxim, but conceptually I get the idea. I sure hope they stick with this conclusion...

That's all of Season 1

If I had to rank the whole season from best to worst

  • BEST Thor vs Raiden - probably my favorite animation with respect shown to both opponents and cool animation techniques through, doesn't feel like it costed too much or didn't have enough time or ended on a weird joke, I honestly was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one on rewatch
  • 2ND PLACE Eggman vs Wily - I'll give this one points for being one-of-a-kind, and being about two characters from franchises I like.
  • 3RD PLACE Zelda vs Peach - an absolutely devastating finisher and a fun look at two non-violent characters fighting each other to the death
  • Chief vs Doomguy - so many variables and weapons and power ups in this fight even if the animation was subpar
  • Starscream vs Rainbow Dash - not an expected matchup, made Rainbow Dash and My Light Pony look badass
  • Luke Skywalker vs Harry Potter - animation was mediocre but the concept, variety of abilities and powers, and the idea of Harry and Luke both having aerial options makes it stick out to me
  • Link vs Cloud - lots of interesting facts and mechanics in the analysis and animation, a little too ambitious with the 3D animation but shorter and sweeter than the next one
  • Goku vs Superman - the research that went into it is impressive and the animation was mostly 3D, probably the highest production value of the season. A lot of questionable animation choices though, the finishing blow didn't sweep me off my feet on rewatch, and using the Abridged cast didn't feel like an accurate representation of Dragonball''.
  • WORST the rest - the rest of the season was pretty mediocre

I wish we had gotten more army vs. army battles after Eggman vs. Wily, but I kinda understand why it didn't happen. It would have been very difficult and expensive to animate such a thing outside of reusing old game sprites like Eggman vs. Wily did, especially in a CGI episode.

One that I was hoping would be army vs. army back in the day was Ganondorf vs. Dracula, but I still ended up liking the fight between them that we actually got.

Earth Defense Force vs. Helldivers would be a really fun army Death Battle.

As for prior episodes, I was really wishing Sauron vs. Lich King was gonna be an army DB. Don't get me wrong, the one we got was epic, but would've been cool to see Mordor armies fight the Scourge.

One problem with armies is their numbers. Some settings, like 40k and Star Wars, may churn out tons of manuals for their armies, but most are not concerned with exact statistics. And numbers matter a lot in army battles... obviously.

[up][up]Oh dear god, please have no army battle with main characters leading them! We all know what will happen - scaling will determine that Johhny Protagonist is roughly quintillion times stronger than the entire army and render the whole point of the fight moot.

That is kinda what happens with Dracula, incidentally. Given how the Power of Dominion works he has pretty much all the abilities of his underlings, including FTL ones like Sky Fish.

Army VS army works for Wily and Eggman because their creations tend to outstrip their own personal rides. As you said though, it's less important when the head honcho's way above their underlings.[lol]

Come to think of it, that does bring an interesting wrinkle to Eggman VS Bowser: Eggman needs the support of his armada to really put in work (including some extremely potent threats like Time Eater) while Bowser's way above his minions and, in cases where he fights alongside them, tends to use them to set up his own moves than to work simultaneously as a team effort. (Not that they mind being support, since he's a Father to His Men and all.)

Tyranids vs Zerg would have been an interesting army fight. It's the original space swarm vs the space swarm that they inspired. Both are galactic threats that fight humans and other aliens. Both have a hivemind and both use organic technology.

However, they have diverged in critical ways in terms of threat level and characterization. For example, The Tyranids hivemind as still not been personified. It remains a unknowable super mind generated from all the Tyranids. Instead, each swarm (Leviathan, Behemoth, Hydra) has it's own preferred tactics and equipment because of how they have had to adapt. While on the flipside, the Zerg are all controlled by a single mind or a group of independent minds more like ant-queens commanding worker drones.

Zerg are interesting in that their entire strength is in the swarm. Pound for pound each individual zerg are weak.

Like, "Feral" zerg without a controlling entity are noted to be such a low threat that backwater yokels among the Terrans hunt them for sport. Not hardened space marines, rednecks.

But if they do have something to lead them? Then you have a problem. They are quintessionally a Keystone Army. Cut off hierarchy of commanders and all units under that leader's thrall then turns on each other until individual packs are formed (ie, kill an Overlord and if there's no spare ones around then you lose that Overlord's pack. Kill a cerebrate/broodmother then that entire brood turns on the Swarm. Kill the Overmind/Overqueen and the entire Swarm turns on each other until a new supreme leader is established).

This hierarchy has repeatedly been exploited and hijacked to turn the Swarm against each other. And yet time and again it's shown that if a single larva survives, then a planet will still see an entire infestation in only a few days/weeks time.

I have no idea how the Tyranids work, but they're psychic right? I think that gives them a pretty hard counter for the Zerg, as it can give them a means to override the Zerg hivemind.

I always thought that an army fight would work well for mecha series. Char Aznable VS Lelouch vi Brittania could easily feature them leading forces from the Principality of Zeon and the Black Knights, allowing them to show off their respective leadership and tactical skills too. And while Char has a clear advantage in skill over most and Lelouch has a great mech (even if he’s not a particularly good pilot), it’s not so much so that the rest of their forces are absolutely obsolete.

A part of me likes the idea of The Borg as one half of an army vs army episode, but that runs into the problem of A) figuring out a good opponent for them that's both appropriate and of a similar power level, and B) the analysis likely being kind of meh, since it mostly boils down to "can we extrapolate the Borg being able to adapt to X opponent's weapons before they're killed".
