There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's the R/Politics forum.

Which is basically a nonstop stream of Anti-Trump news. Because sanity. Not necessarily a thing you associate with reddit, I admit, as someone who is often a rude asshole on the internet. But in this case, the outrage and disgust is real there.

Day 518: Shared values.

1/ Hundreds of separated children have been sent to New York even after Trump signed an executive order ending his administration's policy of separating parents and children who have illegally crossed the border. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Cayuga Centers in East Harlem is currently caring for 239 children separated at the border. The center has cared for 350 children in total over the last two months. Cayuga Centers has $76 million in contracts with the federal government to care for immigrant children. 2/ Immigrants as young as 14 years old who are being housed at a detention center in Virginia say they were beaten while in handcuffs, stripped nude, and placed in cold solitary confinement cells for extended periods of time. The abuse claims are detailed in federal court filings, which include allegations from multiple detainees that guards stripped them of their clothes, strapped them to chairs, and placed bags over their heads. There's going to be so much stuff to try and fix after Trump is gone (whether that be in 2 or 6 years) and what makes it all the more sadder is that a lot of people will have learned absolutely nothing from him.

The Republicans probably won't have grown a spine/conscience, and as soon as Trump is gone a lot of people are going to go back to "Dems are just as bad/why should I vote when I'm not enthusiastic?"

Realistically, what do you think the chances of that changing are?

It depends on how the Republicans go, they're got a critical demographic problem and the inevitable transfer of power is not actually inevitable. It's possible for a party to go into the electoral wilderness in our system for decades.

We shouldn't assume that it's going to happen but a complete implosion (or fading into irrelevance) of the Republican Party is not impossible.

They're rapidly reaching a point where their heinousness is so obvious that if any implosion is going to happen, it probably won't be that much longer.

Maybe, but I think the fact they're still in power means that they're going to stay unified. I think an implosion is much more likely if they get thrashed in the midterms and Trumps loses reelection, then they'll have the mother of all civil wars when they have to decide what to do next.

The GOP won't be broken until the media power of their propaganda outlets is broken, and that may not happen on its own. The Democrats may have to engage in draconian measures that will look like violations of freedom of speech to some people. It's a Catch 22 situation — allow these institutions to endure under the banner of the First Amendment, and they will tear down our democracy. Demolish them and get accused of violating the First Amendment.

I don't know, is "don't intentionally obscure facts and the truth" or something of the like, going against the 1st Amendment. It'd probably have to worded better than that, but still. Easier said than done, I know, but for this hypothetical, how would you do that.

[up] Lying has been repeatedly protected under the 1st Amendment. You can lie your ass off and face no legal repercussions. The only times you can't lie are in a Court of Law (which is Perjury) and lying to a law enforcer (especially the FBI and CIA).

[up][up][up][up]I don't really agree, if their base dies out and they catastrophically fail to court the millennials then their party will either fade into irrelevance or become a regional party localized to the South.

Media apparatus won't really help with that.

Now obviously that's not something that we should waste any time hoping for, everyone should do what they can to fight against the Republican's degeneracy. But it's certainly not impossible.

Why Rank-And-File Evangelicals Aren’t Likely To Turn On Trump Over Family Separation

You could just summarize it as "racism" but it's still good to look at the specifics. It might not stay like that forever though; younger White Evangelicals are much less likely to see immigrants as threatening and agree that they're being abused. But for now though, probably shouldn't expect any big turnaround (I don't think most here were, but still).

Lying isn't protected speech per se, particularly if it hurts others (IE, Fraud). However, what constitutes "lying" is actually pretty subjective, thanks to Poe and Socrates.

A delusional person technically isn't lying to you, and many things-especially in politics-can't be proven objectively false.
