Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The alternative is letting Obama keep his legacy.

As Stephen Colbert put it, this is going beyond beating a dead horse. This is veering dangerously into... a metaphor I'd rather not say.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets. Some reports earlier put Mc Cain's survival at maybe 2-3 months max, so I wouldn't put it past them to gamble on his early demise and try to have another pass the day after.
Honestly, I have no clue just what metaphor you're referring to, so you might as well say it. You can use spoiler tags if you're that afraid of people seeing it.

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-Aroundokay, I was afraid at first that they were going to somehow try to shove another bill in this week to kill the ACA, but then I read the article, and its just them mumbling about trying this shitshow again next year. which, I won't put past them, as it is a dumb plan, but that's been the GOP's MO for a while now. but in general, they are out of good ideas, and grasping at straws, which is dangerous on its own, but not an immediate headache.
oh, and pointless cruelty. their good at that too.

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?@Next Attempt: They couldn't even begin attempting this Insanity with Healthcare again until April 15th. And considering that Budgets can be filibustered, any bill that demands that Congress has to do this again next year will absolutely be filibustered by Democrats, and will not be supported by Moderate Republicans.

@mantis: They'll have to wait for a new session of congress, and while it's certainly plausible that the GOP will hold onto both chambers, it's by no means assured, or even the more likely outcome of the midterms.
Edit: Oh yeah it actually starts next April.

Unless they... remove the filibuster! <dramatic music plays>

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnJust to be on the safe side, we're sure none of the Democrats will defect to vote yes on this, right?

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-Around@AlleyOop: None of the democrats nor either of the Independents will vote for it, we can be pretty sure of that.
x4 Yeah, even with this failure, I don't think McConnell will do it, he knows the political risks are too great to even attempt it. And if a viable Obamacare fix can be voted on (instead of just swept under the rug for either extreme) before then, it will hopefully not be even attempted.
Plus, continuing the Health Care debacle will be painful to Republicans next year, many of whom just want to stop losing and want to start winning; especially since their constituency will be watching everything they do because all of the House and 1/3rd of the Senate is up for Elections!

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnWhat could the GOP possibly try to pull at this point to repeal the ACA before the end of September?
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyI thought we'd established that even the crazy parts of the GOP caucus aren't suicidal enough to remove the filibuster.

"Yup. That tasted purple."x11 Erm... yes.
I also doubt that McConnell is going to resort to killing off the legislative filibuster. The nomination filibuster is one thing, but the consequences of going nuclear on the legislative filibuster could be potentially disastrous for the US, as any change in control of Congress could very well result in poorly thought-out bills being rapidly jammed through. I mean, sure, checks and balances will ensure that a level-headed president could cut off the worst ones by vetoing them or the SC declaring them unconstitutional, but still.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnOf course the Republican Party has proven that, in general terms, long-term thinking isn't their strong suit. McConnell seems the exception that proves the rule.
If Mc Connell kills the filibuster then In the chance that the House or the Senate flips come 2018 that could potentially kill the GOP's ability to get any legislation passed ever again. He's stupid and shortsighted, but I doubt to that level.
Hence "exception that proves the rule". But the rest of the party could pressure him into it, possibly. Especially if he feels vulnerable about re-election given his recent failures.
Politico: GOP already eyeing another repeal attempt
