The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

When does this ban go into effect?

This sucks. I was really hoping this would never happen.

The limited ban is effective immediately I think.

Well, it was nice having a Supreme Court that could restrain Trump while it lasted. With Gorsuch on the Court I'm sure we can expect a lot more of this. But hey, we shouldn't have tried to scare reluctant voters with the Supreme Court, right?

And Kennedy will probably announce his retirement, unless he's just trolling the entire planet.

The US is like two SC retirements or deaths away from being condemned to reactionary rule for a generation or more.

[up] Or a situation where a future President is allowed to stack the court by a friendly senate in order to dilute the power of Trump's nominees, which, while potentially well intentioned carries the same risks as other forms of constitutional hardball.

I mean, the ideal SC situation would be term limits and killing off partisanship within the judiciary. But that takes years, and essentially means changing the professional culture of a lot of judges and lawyers....not easy.

Even the best possible Blue Wave won't save the SC if Kennedy, Ginsberg and/or Bayer leave before 2020.

Incidentally, an opinion piece on the Atlantic argues that Democrats Will Have to Do Better than Ossoff.

It's not coming from a particular angle in regards to the schism in the party, it just points out several reasons why Ossoff's performance compared to the last contest for this seat is not necessarily indicative of democrats' performance in the midterms. That reason being that Tom Cotton was a very popular incumbent running against a complete nobody who got the democratic nomination by default in the last election for the seat prior to the recent special election.

Tom Price, Tom Cotton is someone else altogether. I also see that that article is completely disregarding the other special elections.

[up][up]Muscat, Oman, actually. He's been rather detached from what's going on in his homeland too...

RawStory repost of Newsweek reporting: Jared Kushner meets with Mahmoud Abbas, results are bad.

London-based Arabic daily Al-Hayat reported Saturday that the meeting between Kushner and Abbas had been “tense.” Abbas was allegedly furious when Kushner relayed a set of demands from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a translation of the report by the Jerusalem Post.

Israeli daily Haaretz reported that Palestinian officials were “greatly disappointed” following their Wednesday meeting with Kushner and Jonathan Greenblatt , Trump’s Middle East envoy.

"They sounded like Netanyahu's advisers and not like fair arbiters," a senior Palestinian official told the publication. "They started presenting Netanyahu's issues and then we asked to hear from them clear stances regarding the core issues of the conflict."

According to the report, Kushner and Greenblatt criticized Abbas for failing to condemn a terror attack in Jerusalem last week that left one dead, and for refusing to meet Trump’s appointee as U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, over his support for the settlement program.

A Palestinian official told Al-Hayat that Kushner will now report back to Trump, who will decide whether there are grounds for continuing talks.

A senior Trump administration official told the Jerusalem Post that reports of the president potentially withdrawing from the talks were “nonsense.”

[up][up] I ask because it seems like you might not truly grasp the way Americans and american politics work; sure, tomorrow we could wake up and there are lollipops and rainbows and racists could see the error of their ways and everything could be okay, but we can't wait for that to happen. We have to work with the crappy, flawed world we have, and Americans have a lot of work and an extremely stacked system against them.

[up][up] What the fuck, man!? What gave you that assumption? Do you think that just because I'm away from my homeland equals that I'm detached to what's going on and that my social status is why I'm optimistic as you accused me to? No!

Luigisan, the main issue I see with your optimism is that you don't include anything to back it up. If you want to promote optimism do what I was doing for a while after the election: find actual optimistic things to post about. Successes of the Resistance. People finding common ground. Political news that is generally happier. Those sorts of things.

Hope can't spring up from nothing. It needs things to latch on to in order to grow. Without that it's just seeds blowing in the wind and they're as likely to land on water or blacktop as fertile soil.

I'm not sure the tropers in here know this, but the ruling of the Supreme Court was 6-3 for partially reinstating the ban. However, this is just until October, when they will review the full case, or so I have heard.

So for all of you blaming Gorsuch for this, it was actually the more liberal judges (Ginsburg, Keagan) that voted for it, though the alternative was reinstating the full ban.

Life is unfair...
