There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Latest Poll shows Jon Ossoff(D) beating Karen Handel(R) by 7 Points in Georgia Special Election. He leads her 51%-44%-6%.

Please let this be correct!

[up] The polling firm is highly rated by 538note . So I'm inclined to treat this as a positive sign.

Though we of course need to remember that it's not over until the polls are closed and the last ballot is counted.

Ossoff still needs to win again in 2018 doesn't he? I hope this doesn't just turn out to be a brief bump for the special election.

If he can manage turnout for a special election, a standard election should see about the same amount.

Are they still considered "Sanders Supporters"? It seems like they've gained more prominence than the man himself at this point.

Yeah, I haven't been comfortable with that for awhile now. Saying part of Sander's support base was (or is) toxic is one thing, but I don't like how that's often portrayed as the only people supporting him. Same with Trump, and to a lesser extent Hilary.

Mick Mulvaney says people who are on food stamps need to get a job. Implying, of course, that people that are unemployed are not trying to find work. Which is so false, and I speak from experience.

I hope these promising special election results are a sign of a "blue wave" in 2018, especially with Ossof's lead in Georgia.

If Ossof wins, he'll have the advantages that comes with being an incumbent for the opposition party in 2018. It's hard to beat incumbents for the opposition party during mid-terms.

Trump lawyers up and retains Marc Kasowitz for the Russia investigation.

Related, Trump is “very close” to choosing an FBI director. Former Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman was his top choice until the administration hit reset today, wanting to see a broader list of candidates. Lieberman joined Kasowitz’ law firm in 2013

My the actions our current government has inspired...
Georgia’s 6th District has added 5,500 voters, with more coming
Georgia 6th District voters can catch a free ride to the polls

Meanwhile: Thousands of Georgians dropped from food stamps

Thousands of Georgians are no longer collecting food stamps due to new work requirements, according to state figures released Tuesday.

The new work mandate applies to food stamp recipients in 21 counties - several in metro Atlanta - who are considered able-bodied and without children.

In January, the state informed 11,779 of these recipients that they had three months to find a job or lose their benefits. Come April 1, only 4,528 people in that category were still receiving benefits, according to figures from the state Division of Family and Children Services.

It’s a jaw-dropping decrease of 62 percent, or 7,251 people. Many were simply dropped from the rolls, but others may have obtained jobs or been reclassified as having a handicap.

If Ossof wins, I sincerely hope the Democrats take a good, long, hard look at the things he did in order to win. It may not turn out to be a winning strategy in all states, but at the very least it should be looked at vis-a-vis the rest of Georgia.

RE: "Sanders Supporters"

Call 'em the Unicorn Brigade if you don't want to associate them with Sanders himself. That's who that particular toxic subset are, at the end of the day. Personally I have no real issue with calling them Sanders supporters—unless Sanders himself disavows them—but if you don't like the term there's plenty of others that can be reached for. Brogressives, fauxgressives, the list of bad puns is endless.

I will note that if Sanders himself does disavow particularly bad candidates who invoke his name, such as that idiot who is running against Pelosi, I too will stop calling them "Sanders supporters".

I don't have much issue calling them Sanders supporters if they actually supported Sanders; my issue was equating them with all Sanders supporters, which seems to be very common here with a few people.

Well aren't they? Pretty much every one of these people we're talking either refused to vote for Hillary or refuses to admit that Sanders would have been anything but the perfect candidate to take on Trump.

#190392: May 24th 2017 at 11:24:51 AM

[up]No, they aren't. Most people who wanted Sanders to win were willing to vote for Hilary. Polls showed that; it was less than the reverse but still the majority.

Is this just a semantics issue that you guys aren't getting?

[down]But also that.

It's been almost a year since Bernie Sanders was politically relevant. Anyone who still identifies as a "Sanders Supporter" in current events probably is one of the Unicorn Brigade.

Plus Sanders himself threw in for Clinton, iirc, which the "supporters" ignored. I think I'll follow Amar'e suggestion for Unicorn Brigade for now, if for no other reason than so people here know who I refer to.

Basically, this is what's going to bury us in 2018 and 2020 if we can't get it under control. The Right controls every house of government right now, the need to put our efforts into the future has never been greater, and half the party still thinks the most important fight worth fighting is who will be our Democratic candidate in the 2016 primary.

The biggest weakness the Left has right now is the inability to grasp the concept of having lost.

RE: Trump's visit with the Pope

One thing I've noticed in regards to Trump that is rather unique in a politician - he has a distinct tendency to change his mind on a dime, but when he does so, he does so with absolute conviction, so the "flip-flopper" label can never stick on him. It's downright bizarre to see in practice anywhere, let alone with an elected official, let alone the President.

Dubious Russian document influenced the FBI’s handling of the Clinton probe

In the midst of the 2016 presidential primary season, the FBI received a purported Russian intelligence document describing a tacit understanding between the campaign of Hillary Clinton and the Justice Department over the inquiry into whether she intentionally revealed classified information through her use of a private email server.

The Russian document mentioned a supposed email describing how then-Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch had privately assured someone in the Clinton campaign that the email investigation would not push too deeply into the matter — a conversation that if made public would cast doubt on the inquiry’s integrity.

Current and former officials have said that document played a significant role in the July decision by then-FBI Director James B. Comey to announce on his own, without Justice Department involvement, that the investigation was over. That public announcement — in which he criticized Clinton and made extensive comments about the evidence — set in motion a chain of other FBI moves that Democrats now say helped Trump win the presidential election.

But according to the FBI’s own assessment, the document was bad intelligence — and according to people familiar with its contents, possibly even a fake sent to confuse the bureau. The Americans mentioned in the Russian document insist they do not know each other, do not speak to each other and never had any conversations remotely like the ones described in the document. Investigators have long doubted its veracity, and by August the FBI had concluded it was unreliable.

I really hope Comey owns up to this during his hearing.

Fucking mess.
