The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The reason we laugh is because it's a defensive psychological response to something horrible that we aren't personally experiencing.

Laughing and crying are actually pretty close cerebrally speaking, but that is rather off topic.

That said, not sure if that merits the adjective "horrible", though the appreciation seems to want to put it on a morality scale and that never ends well.

I thought it was funny up until the moment someone actually did die. Mostly since before that point nobody took them seriously. After it became to me a matter of hoping they didn't get the last blaze of glory they wanted.

The economic benefits of some are a train suicidal and depressive people can easily hop on to to get a cheap quick death with some meaning. While sad, the economical and cultural reasons that led to this are no less mockable. Humor's meant to be tragic in its own way, in particular because it is such an incisive way of getting a point across.

It is not strange that we refer to such concept in a humorously ironic way of "drinking the kool aid", where many more people died, for example.

Put another way, rightness is a powerful drug in and of itself and the perception that one is possessed of a secret truth denied by the rest of the world can drive one to antisocial behavior up to and including murder and suicide. "Drinking the Kool-Aid" refers to the indoctrination into such a belief system.

Transcripts of a televised speech by new Democratic Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards.

So, thanks to Jindal, Louisiana's former governor ( and also former practically non-existent U.S. presidential candidate) the state of Louisiana is now facing billions of dollars of debt. It is to the point where Legislators have to come up with a plan to deal with the deficit in the next three weeks or prominent universities and hospitals will suffer bankruptcy and massive lay-offs.

Hey, cool it a bit (edit: ok, nvm). A lot of people have ended up on the wrong side of de-industrialization, and that's playing a big role in this election.

[up] But these people are holding progress back, they vote Republican, why should the Democrats care about them, especially when they can win the Presidency without them and just shaft them further. If the ark of history bends towards justice, than White Americans have more to answer for than any people on Earth.

The arc of history does not bend towards justice. Most of the time it involves the crimes of those in power being swept under the rug for the sake of comity. Whites have a lot to answer for, but it is ridiculous to assert that there are no crimes on the heads of any other race.

The black population of the United States is, undoubtedly, owed a hell of a lot in reparations for their past enslavement and the more recent history of segregation and racial hatred that has yet to be forthcoming.

At worst we white folks are the ones currently alive with the most to answer for, overall. That is perhaps the reason we're the most acceptable of targets where most comedy is concerned.

The Democrats should care, even if they can win the Presidency without them, because they are still American citizens.

That particular question about the issues poor whites face, while quite poorly worded, does illustrate that these kinds of people have grievances. Some are much more legitimate than others, and they do not inherently justify their actions, but they should be addressed.

More then anything the idea that white AMERICA is the worst is the world is absurd, the US has existed for less then 300 years, you've done some horrible (and great) things in that time, but it is the height of arrogance to thing you've surpassed in horror and crimes those who've been around for much longer.
