Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A question for anyone who is an immigrant, who knows an immigrant, or who just wants to chime in. Why the hell would anyone ever want to move to the US? I mean there's the complete and utter lack of a social safety net, the constant violence in most of the major cities,at least compared to Europe and Asia, and of course the racism. Sure at one point it may have been for jobs but with the current state of the economy their aren't that many. From watching domestic news you get the sense that the country is a third world hell hole on the verge of total collapse, and they are always careful to avoid criticizing the country to much, one only has to imagine what foreigners see. I mean the only reason I can think of for emigrating to the US is being unable to get to somewhere better like Europe or Canada,or hell even Brazil. At least in Brazil the cops don't shoot minorities for looking at them funny, they do that to everyone their
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Because shit is worse over there. Usually.
Oh really when?Well, if you're a programmer and move to Frisco, or an investment banker and move to New York...
The USA are a good place for the rich to get richer.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. You have a point about the safety net but from I've looked at about immigrants in other first-world countries, the crime and racism isn't much better in Europe either. And even with the safety net you still get people going on about how they're just leeches like over here so... basically what Le Garcon said, it's usually just worse we're they come from.
Edit: Plus, even if they may be doing sucky here it's probably not wrong to say that a lot of the time their lives do legitimately improve. Though I've never seen anything about that on the whole or by individual immigrant group.

Did you bother to read those articles? They're not all that annoyed with her at all. Most of them assume she's playing politics.
Hell, Politico straight-up asked those CEO's. They're mostly cool with it.
Tech industries have actually started downsizing in the Bay Area and relocating elsewhere because the cost of living is just too exorbitant and telecommuting costs almost nothing. It's the main reason I have a job right now, really.

The artist formally known as Deviant BraeburnWhy the hell would protestors attack an RT reporter? Anyone from RT surely wasn't on the side of the authorities.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I loved the part where he got angry...
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.My parents left to escape violence. I accepted US citizenship to be able to receive my scholarships and go to college here. And it is still better here than back in the home country.
There are somethings that are better over there than here, but it is all about cost and benefit. Right now, the benefitof being an American is better than the cost of being one.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurHuh, Obama might have a career as a standup comedian after the presidency
The sad part is, you know that Peele is like "Oh great, so he gets to work with the president, what do I get to do?" since, like, the actual President stood in for him. So sad.
Maybe then he'll be free to cuss and rant as much as he likes?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Nah, retired presidents generally lay low because they can still reflect poorly on their party if they take any leadership positions on major issues. Some like W. Bush disappear off the face of the earth if they're that unpopular, others will get into diplomacy because it's pretty non-controversial like Jimmy Carter, but not since Willie Taft went on to the Supreme Court have you really seen an ex-president stake major policymaking positions in this country.
The Daily Show With Barack Obama?
"You can reply to this Message!"Trevor Noah is black. Are you saying all black people look the same? SO RACIST!
Point. The Obama Report then?
"You can reply to this Message!"I would hardly call Jimmy Carter non controversial, especially right after he left office.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I would watch either.

Yep I saw that, looks like it bodes very well for her then. She's got strong support from the money and broad popular appeal that crosses party lines.
And that's why to my understanding Sanders is running; to force Clinton to the left on issues, not really to win the nomination himself.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanEh. I'm still voting for him, even if his nomination would strengthen the Republicans' hand.
My Senate election in 2016 might get interesting, though, since Murkowski's up for re-election, but any chance of a Democrat is out for that reason.

"Leading trade exports?" You mean we're selling our Congresscritters overseas now?
Yeah, it's rather funny how things that seem trivial to us are a big deal to the people who move money around for a living. They operate in a world in which fractions of a percent make or break the profitability of an enterprise.
@Pykrete: Rather than using your own subjective judgement in the matter, have you considered evaluating Hillary by the standards of the people she's supposedly in bed with? It doesn't look as if Wall Street is terribly happy with her right now.
