Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Texas House of Representatives is divided again.
Several anti-abortion riders were added to a bill attempting to reauthorize the Texas Department of State Health Services, including one which would remove Texas's exception to its own law allowing termination of a pregnancy after 20 weeks if an abnormality would have killed the child after birth anyways, but after objections by Democrats and a few Republicans (noted: J.D. Sheffield-District 59, who is also a family physician), the author of the initial bill sent it back to committee.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."See, we all knew BHO's a Muslim, and he wants the Turks to murder the good Christians in Armenia for Allah.</Faux News>
I usually try to avoid suggesting violent uprisings. In this case, however, I think one is warranted.
You do not claim to be a democracy and then pull this shit.

No uprisings. Just have the Governor send the NG in and have the outgoing administration arrested at assault rifle point.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsGood point. The Governor is a Democrat.
Where is this place? Missouri?
So it does; how did I miss that.

Fucking hell, just the town only has 300 people. And if that's not bad enough, out of those 300, only 58 voted - "McCray had defeated Mayor Darren Small on April 7 with 38 votes to his 18. Another candidate, Theda Wilson, received two votes."
et. al
According to the St. Louis Times, the town dropped from 10,000 to 300 after the nearby airport started buying up homes as part of a "noise abatement" program, and the town's been just rife with corruption ever since. So there might actually be more legitimacy to this fight than we're thinking - hard to tell, though, since it sounds like everyone's on the take.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Democracy in action, or democracy inaction?
Even if we assume only half of that population is even of age to vote, then only just over 25% of voters actually voted!
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."But obviously it was fraud! /sigh
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Honestly when a town's gotten to this point, Jefferson City should just rescind their charter and have them incorporated by a neighbor.
I remember hearing about a case of a small town like that in California a couple years ago.
But yeah, they should definitely unincorporate.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayCBC: "Swedish cops hit headlines for breaking up fight in NY".
Apparently this has caused people to ask for swedish cops to teach the US ones how to do their job without killing people.
American ones, possibly, but not for others — some aren't even armednote ...

Keep Rolling OnAmerican cops don't need guns they can taser a guy for over a minute straight until he dies and just leave the body to rot.
Now where did I see the story about that one, umm one sec.
here, not the where I originally read it but it will do.

Oh, the irony. Yep, I think we need some mass retraining.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Hearing these stories almost makes me want it to be illegal for cops to kill people but I know that's unrealistic.
Then you get into Demolition Man set of issues where cops are not trained or equipped to handle anyone truly dangerous. Going too far in one direction or another is bad, a balance needs to be struck and right now it is by no means balanced. Most cops threat assessment meters are skewed far too much by racial profiling is probably the biggest and easily addressable issue though..
Btw that movie was awesome at predicting future social issues, I mean holy crap it is spot on.

Demolition Man is an often over-looked gem. Yes, its amazingly cheesy, but even now it still holds up amazingly well as societal commentary. Especially in matters of commercialism, treatment of the homeless, violence, and detachment from other human beings.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThat's why I said it's unrealistic. I know some people think of cops as nothing more than thugs with badges(unfortunately true in many cases) but they do perform a vital role in society and the nature of their role will put them in life or death situations.
How about something like an Armed Response Vehicle?
Keep Rolling OnDemolition Man offers some interesting commentary like the ones shimaspawn described, but it also seems to be a rather strawman-ish take on the ills of political correctness and nanny state culture (getting fined for using swear words?), something Sylvester Stallone has been fairly vocal about both in and out of his movies.
His earlier film, Cobra is basically a treatise on how due process limits our ability to fight hardened criminals, and the lack of subtlety is hilariously demonstrated with things like his character suppressing a hostage situation in a highly over-the-top fashion and the Ronald Reagan portrait sitting in his apartment that can be seen as he cleans his 1911 pistol.
For the record, Cobra is one of my favorite movies and Demolition Man is pretty good, too.
It might have been strawman back then but certainly not now.
Shhhh. You'll distract the president from finding the perfect spot in Turkey to put some Jupiter missiles.
For science of course.
