Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If they are, they probably won't use them because the moment they use them, every other nation with nukes will freak out, and use their own nukes on Iran.

[up] Assuming Israel doesn't nuke Iran the moment the Iranian government announces there nukes.

I'm more worried about whether Israel, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia can trust Iran, than I am about Iran's trustworthiness.

Isn't our military budget bigger than every country combined?

And Romney wants to add 2 trillion!?

The notion that America has 2 trillion dollars it can afford to add to the military budget but cannot afford to reduce its mortality rates among its poor, elderly and infirm is deeply, deeply angering.

"Heartless fucking bastards" is a massive understatement for such people.

I'm about sixteen minutes in on that O'Reilly Stewart video. Does the moderator ever get less helpless? This is just painful to watch, I keep having to pause it so I have a break to wince.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

No. Bill does continue his habit of interrupting.

That said he gets better toward the end.

They are both friends with each other and respect each other, which is nice I admit.

It just blows my mind. I guess the GOP wants us to be like...the Klingons of the world or something.

@Braeburn: Israel would be far less likely to use their nukes because their government is less insane than the Iranian government, and the moment they use their nukes, they will get nuked by at least one other nation.

@Kark: She's still better than Jim Lehrer.

@Braeburn: I feel so sorry for Johnson.

I'm for cutting 25% of our military budget. And none of those cuts effecting the Airforce and Weapons Development.
Try 50%. And a lot of so-called weapons development has to go. We spend way too much money on gizmoes that don't work and wouldn't be useful if they did. We've tried to build humvees with helicoptor rotors on the top. We've wasted money on the F-35. We've spent millions of dollars testing new systems to find out they don't work and then spend billions implementing them anyways. That shit has to end.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Clearly you have more faith in the Israeli government than I do.

And if Iran goes nuclear most of the Middle East will follow.

[up] 35% and I'd cut most of the useless programs in weapon development.

"humvees with helicoptor rotors on the top."

I don't care how much money we waste on this, I want to see Arial humvees in action. We can call them humbees.

[up] I have faith that the Israeli government, while stupid and not very nice, isn't insane enough to launch nukes. The only government that I'm concerned might actually do that is the North Korean government.

Okay back the fuck up. Not that it would surprise me but can someone provide me with a source for that 2 trillion number? That would mean our total military spending would skyrocket to about 3 trillion which would be 60% of the current federal budget (assuming nothing is cut).

As for your first sentence look at this chart. It's not more than the whole world but it is equivalent to the next ten biggest spenders combined.

[up][up]They probably would do that if Romney won since he wants to go after Iran anyway.

Romney's site said they would add 4% of our GDP to our military.

Which is 2 Trillion.

Its still spending 2 fucking Trillion Dollars. Money our military says it doesn't even need.

Meanwhile he wants to cut programs like PBS which is .01% of our budget.

I know it's a lot and I think he's an idiot but your initial post was somewhat misleading. Either way we need to make the expenses drop instead of just slowing growth.

edit: PBS is less than .01% last I checked. It's literally a drop in the bucket.

@Thorn

True, but the fact that he hasn't been vocal about this makes me doubt his commitment to the idea. I doubt he'll seriously push for it if he encounters a serious and unwavering opposition. Which he probably will.

This is him making promises he doesn't care to keep, in order to earn the far right's support.

Speaking of the Military:

The professional core of the U.S. military overwhelmingly favors Mitt Romney over President Obama in the upcoming election — but not because of any particular military issues, according to a new poll of more than 3,100 active and reserve troops.

[up][up]Doesn't surprise me.

1. Military types are generally more conservative anyway.

2.

about 80 percent white and 91 percent male.

Sounds like your typical Romney supporter.

Now if you show me a poll that says most teachers favor Romney then Obama's in trouble.

The article also noted that soldiers get free healthcare, so Obamacare isn't something they consider a benefit.
