I myself don't have a plot or anything that I'm thinking has been done too closely before, but I thought it'd be nice to make this thread to help out people who think that their plots, characters, etc. may be similar to something else, something more popular especially, that's if course been done before.

Now, this isn't meant to rile up paranoia and make people think that their idea might be really close to something else and will totally be compared unfavourably with it and thought a ripoff or any of that! You can just come here and ask, "I have this [blank] that I thought up recently, is it similar to [blank 2]/ does this remind you of anything that I haven't read/watched yet?"

Simple enough, I think, and I hope it helps some people! I know that in the past I've come up with great ideas only to realize that they were just rehashed from something else, and other ideas that were actually original but I thought weren't.

I'm not sure how useful this thread will be, because It's Been Done. It's all been done, or if not all, certainly almost everything. Having a thread like this makes it sound like having a work that bears some resemblance to another work is bad, instead of inevitable. Of course, I'm all for originality, but if your goal is to write something that's never, ever, been done before in any way, it probably won't happen.

No, this isn't about It's Been Done, since yes, it's hard to be 100% original. This is more about helping people when their works are a little too close to others, or if they think that may be the case.

At a suitable level of abstraction, everything has been done, period. This thread serves no purpose as it would only degrade into long discussion on how a story totally is or totally is not like that other story. There are no parameters on which one might be able to objectively decide whether a story is similar or not to another.

I shall conclude with my usual advice: Write the damn story. It has been done before. Da Vinci didn't paint the first portrait of a woman either. There is no shame in doing something well.
