Go on MAL and search up a series; you can find ratings for the different subs of it.
I guess it is.Whenever there's a legal simulcast for a series (Crunchyroll, Niconico, whatever), I'll be using that. They range from the okay to the pretty good (I love what they've been doing with the 4chan slang in Steins Gate), and they're usually released a lot quicker than actual fansubs (for obvious reasons).
Then it usually depends on the shows I want to watch : if a good fansub group only subs a show I have no interest in, I obviously won't bother. So my group choice are usually on a show-by-show basis.
That said, Mazui and UTW are generally quite good. GG are highly unreliable : why they can sub shows properly and without drama, they like to start trolling when they feel the show's bad. Also, they tend to inflate filesizes a bit too much to my liking. On the other hand, they do tend to take on shows that nobody else is subbing.
And that's my take : on many shows, you're lucky if two different groups are speed-subbing them. And unless they're absolutely terrible (which is rarely the case), I'm not picky.
Anything by UTW and Mazui. Static-Subs is also great. Ayako is hit-or-miss, IMO, and Commie is a bit like gg in terms of localization, with less trolling.
gg is tsundere: if they like the show, the subs are excellent (see Kara No Kyoukai) but if they hate it, they're not above trollsubbing (see Hidan No Aria).
Groups like Hatsuyuki, Doki and Chihiro are on the same level for me, but I prefer UTW and Mazui over them.

Kn K wasn't translated by GG staff, they just provided encoding and distribution support. It was translated by one of the big names in English-Language Type-Moon fandom, who also worked on translating some of the games.
GG is a terrible, terrible group, and aren't worth supporting unless they are literally the only option.

I have never given a shit. I take what fansubs I get. Especially since I usually stream anime that I'm watching, which apparently makes me a huge moron or something. Lately I've been finding more and more that I'd watch official subs or even find it dubbed as opposed to fansubs anyway. (Obviously if I'm watching it dubbed it's not a show that's airing this season. So yeah.)
Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.Guess what? gg decided to support TakaJun and do all the boring gruntwork like timing and encoding for him. Because they respected him and wanted the movies to be subbed by the same people who translated the games for consistency and such. That's not the kind of action you take when you don't want the show to get the best translation possible.
Edit: I don't know who contacted who first, but either way they worked together.

Ok? And? Its not like GG's the only group that could have done that.
I have tons and tons of respect for Taka Jun, he's done amazing work for the english Type-Moon fandom. That does not mean I have to give GG any particular credit for that, especially when they've since pissed away whatever goodwill that did earn them.
It depends on the anime, really.
One Piece- Any that are available
Futari Wa Pretty Cure Arienai and/Or the English Dub, which is surprisingly accurate.
Fresh Pretty Cure- Cure Com I just love their adaptations, and Woolseyism approach towards translating. Pretty Cure in general is very good in this aspect.
Heartcatch Pretty Cure Doremi Fansubs Yes, it has the infamous Lad Holyman as its translator but I love their work. Also I love that they dont put karaoke on cool scenes that have songs in them, allowing you to appreciate the really good animation the show has to offer.
If there's "official"/legal subs (or dubs), I'll watch that. Otherwise...I don't know, it's pretty rare for a show I'm interested to not have a simulcast these days. In those cases I'll sometimes go on /a/ and see what people are saying has the best fansubs on there. 4chan can be a bit iffy but they generally have pretty good taste (when they're not trolling).
Current project: Cleaning up the Chrono Crusade examples one at a time. God help me.I pick whatever's available. The only group that's ever annoyed me with their subs is gg.
Crunchyroll. They're official though, so i don't know if they count as fansubs.
For me, I guess it depends on who's going the show. I have a pretty high regard for UTW, and most of the shows I'm watching right now are Crunchyroll stuff, so I end up using their rips when available. For One Piece I initially watch Funimation's stream, and later the yibis sub when it's available, since their work is generally, at the very least, proofread more thoroughly, and 720p beats out a low-quality stream any day of the week.
I don't have too much of an issure with gg's translations apart from when they try to shoehorn memes into the script, but I hate how large they inflate the file sizes, and knowing that they do it on purpose doesn't help. There's absolutely no reason for a twenty-four minute video having a filesize bordering on 1G. None at all.
Wow...I'm honestly surprised people actually keep track of actual groups.
CAUSE EVERY GIRL IS CRAZY 'BOUT A SHARP DRESSED MAN
Why would that be surprising? I'm more surprised that people don't. Subtitled anime doesn't just magically appear online, people have to do shit to get it there, and knowing who and how its done is pretty useful information.
You vastly overestimate people's tendency to care. I'm sure there are plenty of anime fans who don't bother to think twice about where their fansubs come from. As long as it's there and it's free, who are they to question where it comes from?

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone. This is obviously a case to case basis.
Imoutos are the best! Follow at your own risk. Tumblr.GG are trolls. They even mocked Horrible Subs and stole S7 and Ao Ex from them. I kind of liked Horrible Subs due to consistency. GG's subs isn't really a practical choice due to size. And Koda's a great big fat troll who loves his mommy too much. I say we rid of Koda by trolling his blog! WHOSE WITH ME?
...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura Chifuyuwhen i first started watching fansubbed anime
if i have choice, i chose the fansub group with the prettiest name (Chihiro, Exiled-Destiny, Doki)
i still do it this way when i have no idea what to do
djmaca: Koda is a girl.
iM@S archive of materials.
Uhh...are you aware that Horrible Subs is not, in fact, a fansubbing group? All they do is rip episodes from legit streams, be it Crunchyroll, Funimation, Anime Network and now Nico Nico?
GG are trolls, Horriblesubs are assholes.
So, since fansubs are a huge part of watching anime, which fansubs are the good ones, and which fansubs do you usually use?
