RROD is a hardware failure. It has nothing to do with your internet connection. What you are experiencing is a coincidence.
Is yours an older model or a Slim?

Now that I have my console back (replaced, not repaired, plus a free 1 month XBL card for my troubles), it looks like whatever the problem was has been cleared up.

Hm... tried getting on LIVE to download a few things earlier, and my console kept RRO Ding. Guess this is what was at fault.
