You mean finding games, physically, or just discovering that some games were good?
Likes many underrated webcomicsBoth I guess ^^
The Protomen enhanced my life.I think my best find was in an EB/Gamestop store around 2001-2002. I saw a used copy of Suikoden 2 with just a jewel case and no instructions for $30, and bought it. Haven't seen any store selling it for less since. That said, you can probably find used copies of this game on eBay without spending a fortune.
On the north side of Chicago, there's a retro game store called People Play Games. They sell games and systems from the 70s through today. This sort of independent store can only survive in a hipster/alternative neighborhood... Anyway, I've seen lots stuff there which is either rare or frequently forgotten, such as:
- First and second generation systems and games, including Odyssey and Fairchild Channel F.
- Vintage games made in English that weren't distributed in North America, such as Spectrum cassettes.
- Relatively obscure systems and games (3D0, TG-CD, Neo Geo Pocket Color, etc).
- Some out of print console games, such as Panzer Dragoon Saga, Bubble Bobble 2 for NES, and Earthbound.
- PC software that hasn't been available in boxed copies for years, such as Sam and Max Hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle.
- A few collector's items, such as prototypes or early review copies of otherwise not-too-obscure games.
- A few imports in English, including the UK versions of Shining Wisdom and Tales of Eternia PSP. And some untranslated stuff like Rhythm Tengoku for GBA, a couple PC-FX games, and licensed games based on Mitsuru Adachi's Touch.
Of course, it's tough to find *deals* on genuinely rare games. And if the only way to get a legit copy of the game you want is only through importers or auctions, then get ready to pay.
Back before they re-released Final Fantasy Tactics for PS 1 I found a copy for 10 dollars at a yard sale. Used copies were selling for 40-60 dollars on eBay at the time so I played it for a bit and then re-sold it.
I also managed to snag a copy of the original Chrono Trigger at a used game store, which also got flipped for a profit after being played to death.
I hardly buy any games anymore though.... my BS degree program is keeping me from having any fun :(
Finding out about Red Alert: A Path Beyond was very interesting.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelThis actually happened a couple weeks ago, but it bears sharing:
My friend and I were looking for a copy of Shadow Of The Colossus. We found one in a local Game Stop. We went in and bought it. The guy at the counter looks at it and remarks:
"Funny. I had a copy of Ico in here just this morning, but I sold it to a guy JUST an hour or two ago..."
Cue anguish and Face Palming.
But wait! It gets better! Said guy had also come in a few days before that looking for a copy of Persona 4, only to find out that their copy of that game had just been sold the day before!
And guess which two people had just bought it from that store...?
