I use music all the time to establish atmosphere while I write. And I used heavy metal (not so much death metal) in this one. http://www.thekingdomsofevil.com/ Is your writing online anywhere?

It influences most of the writing I have done. I try to make the settings as dark and brutal as possible. May lead to darkness induced audience apathy, but I don't write for an audience.

I was working on a death metal fairytale at one point, but I never finished it. Should get back to that.

So I decided to do an experiment and try and write the most brutal/horrific scenes in the work I was writing under the influence of death metal.
The results were interesting. For one thing, the written horror became more about the horror of the violence perpetrated and the utter despair of the characters who had all hope snatched away from them in their final moments.
Have any of you guys tried to write Death Metal influenced scenes in your fiction to get the mood of the piece just right?
