Well, considering that it is

a) an MMORPG

b) developed by Japanese

I doubt it will have anything in common with Wizardry 8, which is a pity, because that game rocked. Other than that, it looks like just another MMORPG, so... meh.

However, the Japanese have shepherded the series long after Sir-Tech went away, and Headlok knows the series intimately.

If it's free to play, it'll be worth a shot at least, but I have doubts about it feeling much like the actual Wizardry series.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Yeah, I was surprised after reading the article here that Japan loves Wizardry far, far more then the US ever did.

That being said, I wouldn't touch this with a ten-foot pole:

  • Eastern MMOs tend to be nightmare grindfests.
  • Wizardry is hard as hell.
  • Permanent death as an option for masochists, sure, as a default function, to a grind-heavy genre with a monthly fee? Hahaha...NO.

It sounds potentially awesome, like they might be trying to make an proper challenging game instead of a Progress Quest variant.

I think permanent death may make for a different MMO altogether, and I can see this having it's fans. To be honest, I'm interested.

Taking a break from FE1, for the FE8 draft instead

I think Wizardry Online will be more like Rogue Online. You know, not really to buff and develop your character but to see just how far you can get without biting the big one.

Well the game just came out yesterday out of beta. Had some connectivity issues where the screen gets stuck at "connect" for a really long time until it finally gets me in. Must have been a lot of people logging in at the same time. I was only able to do the tutorial stuff, including the dungeon trial for joining the Adventurer's Guild.

BTW: since the other thread is locked, is it possible for a mod to rename this to "Wizardry Online" instead of "Wizardly"?

So far, not impressed. Hello Generic MMO #3,571. Is it an In Name Only game or are there Wizardry elements outside of the starting town?

Been hoping for a game like this to come around for quite awhile now. Won't be able to play till this weekend, but hoping to play with a friend and work together to survive.

Welp, now it's been taken out of Steam, likely due to the screwed up connection issues. At least it's not as bad as Anarchy Online's initial launch. Obviously, it's still available elsewhere, like in the official game site.

To reply to what Rotpar said in the other, now closed, thread:

Things that concern me? The races and classes. Only cleric, fighter, mage, and thief at the moment, the generic but important staples. Races are equally generic; humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and Cutesy Tiny Japanese Things. Where are mooks or draconians? Psionics and samurai? Hoping these things are planned.
The Cutesy Tiny Japanese Things are hobbits, they had to rename and slightly redesign them a while back to stop Christopher Tolkien from suing them. Anyways; Wizardry Online is based on the Llylgamyn games (Wizardry I through V). Mooks, draconians and psionics are exclusive to the Dark Savant trilogy (Wizardry VI, VII and 8). Dark Savant stuff may be added later if the game proves popular enough and there is enough demand, but I wouldn't be crossing my fingers for it happening anytime soon. It is strange that they don't have the Llygamyn game's advanced Samurai, Lord, Bishop and Ninja classes though, so it is likely they will added those later at least.

So, how *do* they make permadeath viable in an MMO, wherein you have to deal with stuff like trolls and P Kers?

You just deal with it. This isn't the first game out there with permadeath and being killed and completely stripped of all your precious rare gear (probably by a hacker or a roving PK army, even) is part of the whole experience in those titles.

So. . . they apparently expect people to regularly pay money for stuff they will lose? Do they actually have anybody involved whose run a business before?

They have services in the game that allow you to put rare items in a bank of some sort, so as to use them later on and not lose them when someone inevitably kills you and loots your corpse.

Yep. When you get rare stuff you have to be careful of where and how you use it. Pull it out for PvE when you're sure you have good friends watching your back or are part of one of the aforementioned roving PK armies yourself... but try going around in normal gear with empty pockets if you're questing alone.

Adds a whole level of tension and metagaming to the experience but it's considered a hardcore thing for a reason.

Wasn't losing all your good stuff the thing that (hopefully) killed "The War Z"?

No, it was everything else that killed The War Z.
